THE UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON JOE McLAUGHLIN PUBLIC RELATIONS DEPARTMENT DIRECTOR, GENERAL PUBLICITY DAYTON, OHIO 45409 AREA CODE 513 461-5500 EXT. 500 DAYTON, Ohio October 19, 1966 --- John Canaday, celebrated art critic of the New York Times since 1959, will present the fifth University of Dayton Arts Series program on Thursday, October 27, at 9 :15 P. M. in the ballroom of the Kennedy Union. Mr. Canaday's lecture is entitled "Artist, Cr itic and Public". Mr. Canaday, who was born in Fort Scott, Kansas, has been a professor wi th the University of Virginia, a civilian employee with the Federal Economic Administration in the Belgian Congo, a U.S. Marine in the South Pacific during World War II, an author and an executive with the Philadelphia museum. Mr. Canaday is a product of Dallas and San Antonio public schools and graduated from the University of Texas. He took a professional course in painting and received his graduate degree in the history of art at Yale University. He taught the history of art at the University of Virginia before going into government service. After World War II and U.S. Marine Corps service he was director of the Art School at Tulane University. He served with the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He is the author of Metropol itan Seminars in Art, a series of 24 monographs, and Mainstreams of Modern Art, both distributed by the Book-of-the Month Club. The latter also was printed in England and has served as a text book i n both countries. Under the name ~at thew Head he has authored seven mystery novels and has writt en many magazine articl es besides his syndicated column for the New York Times.
