The lack of a work of this kindis a handicap to those interestedin research or in the study of some aspect of adulteducation, and in a way this bibliographyis a result of my own needs anddifficulties in carrying out someresearch into the history of adult education. The entries have been selectedfrom writings since 1835 andinclude those published up to the end of1965.The criterion for selection was thatthe article be written about Australia orhave some particular relevancefor Australians. Books have been included but themajority of the entries relate topamphlets and articles in periodicals and journals.Some slight articles provide theonly infor- mation available at present or arethe only indicators of opinion oncertain topics. It is to be hoped that the contentof such articles will be incorporatedinto more com- prehensive publications as researchand the study of adult educationincreases. The entries are grouped undersubject headings.Within each section they have been arranged inchronological order.This arrangement is complicated by the importance of the states inthe Australian system of education.I have tried to overcome this by providing crossreferences wherever required, especially atthe end of some sections.The indexes, too, have beenarranged to supplement the list of contents and should be usedin conjunction with it to facilitatereference to a particular topic, trend or movementin adult education. All the cited works of a writer arelisted after his name in the author index to make reference easier, andthe information given about eachperiodical in the special list provided should provehelpful to those interested. It is hoped to keep the bibliography upto date by the issue of supple- ments and their incorporationlater into a revised edition.Any lists or suggestions that readers may have will bewelcomed and we would appreciatereceiving a copy or notice of any material that has beenoverlooked, or that may be published inthe future.
