Annual Report August 2013 - July 2014

Transforming lives through education, commitment and love. Annual Report August 2013 - July 2014 “Your investment in San Miguel during the 2013-2014 school year yielded a high return…” www.sanmiguelchicago.org About San Miguel Founded in 1995 in a convent dining room with 18 students A private independent Catholic School based on Lasallian Principles Three core programs: middle school, graduate support, and family support Serves students who are academically and financially at-risk Serves 90 middle school students, over 120 graduates, and over 600 family members Relies almost entirely on community support and donations to operate Is a model for urban education- helping students improve 4-6 grade levels in just three years and graduate high school at rates much higher than their neighborhood peers. “San Miguel is a safe and loving environment for my child. I know San Miguel will take care of our children from the second they walk through the door until they are in college. After that, graduates come back to the school to help serve; San Miguel is like family.” 2 San Miguel Parent Winter 2014/2015 www.sanmiguelchicago.org A Smart Investment As I sit down to write this letter I cannot help but smile. I can honestly say that San Miguel School Chicago is in a very hopeful place and things are looking even brighter for the days ahead. This year: • 100% of our high school seniors graduated (in four years) Thaddeus Smith, Principal/Executive Director compared to 60% of their neighborhood peers (in five years) • 92% of those students went on to college and the remainder entered the workforce or joined the military. • The San Miguel Class of 2014 increased 4-6 grade levels in reading, math, and science in just three years. Your investment in San Miguel during the 2013-2014 yielded a high return! Not only did the students and graduates make the most of this opportunity through hard work and excellent achievements but the Board of Directors and leadership at San Miguel did as well. Expenses were cut significantly in the areas of administration and fundraising costs so that more of your dollars went directly to the programs that serve our students, their families and the Back of the Yards neighborhood! (see next page) I would like to extend a very sincere thank you to those of you who remained committed to San Miguel over the past 19 years. And, for those of you who are new to San Miguel, WELCOME! The days ahead are bright for our students, graduates, AND our family of supporters. Finally, I would like to invite you to get involved this year. On the last page of this Annual Report there is a calendar of activities. Your support is making a difference and goes a long way here at San Miguel School Chicago! Gratefully Yours, Thaddeus Smith Principal/Executive Director 3 www.sanmiguelchicago.org Investing in Relationships that Keep our Mission Strong 97% of San Miguel’s operating rev- “One of the most exciting things about my job at San enue comes from donors like you, Miguel is that I not only get to see the students’ lives and we are invested in keeping these transformed but I also get to see the lives of our donors relationships strong so that we can and volunteers transformed through their participation continue our mission!
