NEWS RELEASE Keswick’s Diamond Jubilee Programme Preparations are well under way for Keswick’s celebrations for the special 4-day bank holiday which commemorates The Queen’s 60 years reign. The Queen will also ‘preside’ over our celebrations – or at least her portrait will. A mosaic portrait made up of 2,000 photos of Keswick will make its debut appearance in the Market Square on the walls of the Keswick Information Centre in The Moot Hall. The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant - Sunday 3rd June Keswick is planning a day where all can watch The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant whilst enjoying a Big Jubilee Lunch and being entertained by live music! Watch the pageant live on large screen in Keswick’s Market Square as it takes place on the River Thames between 2-6pm. The pageant will consist of up to 1,000 boats assembled from across the UK, the Commonwealth and around the world. The Queen will lead the flotilla by travelling in the Royal Barge. This event is being organised by the Thames Diamond Jubilee Foundation to celebrate Her Majesty’s sixty-year reign, and will be one of the largest flotillas ever assembled on the river. Wander down to Derwentwater and take a trip on Keswick’s own flotilla – our launches will be decorated for the occasion and will cruise you around our lake in style. Song & Dance – Sunday 3 rd June Live Music will be provided throughout the day – full details of the line-up will be announced soon! A chance to have a royal romp whilst listening to local bands. The Big Jubilee Lunch - Sunday 3rd June The Big Jubilee ‘Lunch’ will be a part of the main programme of events to celebrate and commemorate the Queen’s 60 year reign . Food Stalls offering you a wide variety of delicious food for your Big Lunch and a seating area will be provided in The Market Square from 10am – 6pm to provide the basis for a great Street Party. Keswick will in fact be one big Street Party as The Cumberland Pencil Museum also celebrates this momentous occasion by putting on their Big Jubilee Lunch at Sketchers Coffee Shop, served from 11am-4pm in a marquee on the grounds of the Cumberland Pencil Museum which will be themed with Jubilee bunting, trestle tables and Jubilee crafts to keep the whole family involved. They will be serving a selection of traditional Sunday lunch buffets, in the form of roast beef sandwiches with a dash of horseradish sauce, roast chicken baguettes with warm sage and onion stuffing, and to finish afternoon tea fruit scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream. There will also be a themed Big Jubilee Lunch box for the kids, with their own special Sunday lunch picnic food,so everyone in the family can join in. Over the 4 day bank holiday weekend The Cumberland Pencil Museum will also be running a series of events. On Sunday 3rd, they are linking up with the National Trust and have arranged a guided walk to the Seathwaite Mine where the Graphite for our Pencils was first discovered. Then on Monday 4th & Tuesday 5 th there will be a themed Kid’s quiz trail around the Museum, and they will also be holding a kid’s watercolour demonstration event hosted by a professional children’s artist Beverley Haines. Sessions are free to join and will run 10am – 4pm over the 2 days. For more information please contact Alex Farthing at the Pencil Museum Keswic k Cumbria - [email protected] or call direct on 017687 73626 The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Beacons - Monday 4th June In the evening of 4 th June a network of 2,012 Beacons will be lit by communities and individuals throughout the United Kingdom, The Queen will light the National Beacon, following the Diamond Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace. Keswick Scouts will be lighting a beacon on Catbells and Churches Together will be lighting a beacon on Binsey as part of this network of beacons. Whilst we are waiting for the Catbells beacon to be lit (at 22:10 hours), we can warm our hands at 21:40 by a bonfire on Crow Park, courtesy of The National Trust whilst eating sausages provided from a Keswick Scouts BBQ. Keswick’s own floating flotilla – the Keswick launch –will be decorated in bunting and softly lit to complete the celebratory setting down at the lakeside. A memorable occasion in a memorable setting. Enjoy the whole area over the Jubilee Weekend The special 4- day bank holiday is the perfect time to visit Keswick, the Lake District, enjoy the Big Lunch and beacon lightings and still have plenty of time explore our area and try something new. Keswick Archers carry on our Jubilee Programme by holding a County Competition Diamond Jubilee Shoot at the Keswick Rugby Ground on Monday 4 th June. Spectators are welcome to come along and watch, and following the competition the Club is holding a Come and Try session from 2.30 – 4.30pm. Anyone who wishes to have a try at archery can have three shots for £1 with the club’s coach and senior members on hand to help. Thornthwaite – a Lakeland village situated between Whinlatter Forest and the shores of Bassenthwaite - are celebrating The Jubilee; there are open gardens on 3rd June between 1.00 and 6.00 and a Jubilee Flower Festival in Thornthwaite Church on 2nd and 3rd June. From 28 th May Thornthwaite Gallery are holding a Jubilee Exhibition – jubilee themed work from artists who normally soak up inspiration from the mountains and meres have turned their attention to Her Majesty. In oils, watercolours, pastels, acrylics and even glass – images associated with The Queen are being created. They will be shown in the exhibition with visitors asked to choose their favourite.
