I am astounded by the progress we have made over the decades, and I am Dean’s confident that we have accomplished the vision that the University of California had when they set out to build a world-class dental school on the UCLA campus. During the 2014-2015 fiscal year, a series of events and symposiums will be held to commemorate our 50th Anniversary. A celebratory gala will take place in May of 2015 that will bring together up to 500 academic and community leaders, faculty, alumni, and students in Los Angeles. I hope that everyone will join us in the year-long festivities to observe this significant milestone. Falling at the same time as the dental school’s 50th Anniversary milestone is the launch of The Centennial Campaign for UCLA. The 5-year campaign kicked-off in May 2014 and will continue through UCLA’s 100th anniversary in 2019. The passing of 100 years marks a historic moment here on campus and we invite the entire community to celebrate with us as we look to the future of UCLA and the UCLA School of Dentistry. Following our curricular reform process in recent years, the School of Dentistry was tasked with restructuring our academic divisions and sections. A specially appointed committee was charged with reviewing and recommending a new structure. After numerous discussions and evaluations, the committee endorsed potential changes, which would be effective at the start of the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Based on the committees’ recommendation, the creation of two new divisions was announced, the Division of Constitutive and Regenerative Sciences, encompassing the Sections of Endodontics, Periodontics, and Restorative Dentistry, and the Division of Growth and Development, encompassing the Sections of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. Additionally, fixed prosthodontics curriculum was moved from the Section of Restorative Dentistry to the Division of Advanced Prosthodontics to better align similar disciplines. These changes are reflected in the faculty recognition section in the back of this report. We have continued to improve in all areas while also fulfilling our mission of improving the oral and systemic health of the people of California, the nation, and the world through education, research, patient care, and public service. I am pleased to highlight our achievements briefly below and in-depth throughout this report. Training future leaders in the dental community. At the 47th Commencement Ceremony that was held on June 1st, we conferred 106 DDS and 19 oral biology MS and PhD degrees, and awarded 51 advanced training certificates. This commencement was especially significant. One of our very own alumni was honored with the UCLA Medal – the university’s highest honor. Dr. Gary Parker, UCLA DDS ’77, was presented with the medal by UCLA Chancellor Gene Block. A full article can be found on page 56 about Dr. Parker and the UCLA Medal. Dr. Parker is just one alumnus who has made an impact on the dental field and beyond. Many leaders in dental research, advocacy, and academia are graduates of the School of Dentistry. There is no question that our alumni will continue to be recognized as the pioneers, the innovators, and the trailblazers in the oral healthcare community.
