Dr. Burgess Special Address August 31, 2018 Remembering John McCain Hello, this is your Congressman Michael Burgess. This week our nation lost a great American hero and public servant in the highest regard. Senator John McCain served our nation – first in the Navy and then in the United States Senate. From a POW camp in Vietnam to the halls of the United States Capitol, Senator McCain embodied the American spirit through his patriotism, dedication, and service. A proven warrior, Senator McCain used his influence in Congress to fight for veterans and members of the Armed Forces, the people of Arizona, and his fellow Americans. Throughout his life, Senator McCain touched the lives of millions of Americans – including mine. During the 2008 presidential election, I had the privilege of working alongside Senator McCain as he shaped his health policy platform. As we traveled through North Texas together, I had the opportunity to introduce him to our district and to many of you. Despite falling short of the White House in 2008, there is no question that Senator McCain made an indelible impression on the American people. It is fitting that Senator McCain has joined a very select group of Americans to receive the honor of lying in state at the United States Capitol. This morning, we gathered in the Rotunda to remember our friend and pay tribute to his great contributions to our nation. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to pay my respects to Senator John McCain and to extend my condolences to his family and loved ones. These tributes to Senator McCain are another reminder of the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans and their unwavering love of country. As we remember Senator McCain, I encourage all North Texans to thank our nation’s veterans for their service to America. As always, I appreciate your comments and your questions on this issue or any other issue. May God bless you and your family, may God bless the McCain family, may God bless our veterans, and as the song says, God bless you Texas. .
