..................................................................................................... 32 vi vii INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND This study looks at how different family values are embedded in Samia Proverbs. Therefore, this section will give a brief basis of the study for instance the background, definition of the key terms in the study, problem statement, Research questions, Objectives, Significance of the study. In Kenya year book 2018,Taban Lioyong, Owuor Anyumbo and Ngugi Wa'Thiongo define Proverbs as, "terse pithy statements full of folk wisdom and they are classified by social function since they are inextricably linked to conversation and speech, Therefore, proverbs are characterised by speaking. Family values are sometimes refered to as familial values which are cultural or traditional that pertain to the family's structure, function, roles, beliefs, attitudes and ideas. In that case, the oral literature of the Samia communicates to it's societal members using proverbs which is the major aspect in the study to passion on different family values.
