August 8, 2021 The Village Community Presbyterian Church PO Box 704 | 6225 Paseo Delicias | Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067 Gathering for Worship As you enter this sacred time, please quiet your mind, meditate on the Scriptures, and pray for the Holy Spirit to prepare you to worship the Living God. PRELUDE An Wasserflüssen Babylon J.S. Bach Nicholas Halbert, organ WELCOME The Rev. Dr. Jack W. Baca CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 46:1-11 Leader: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. People: Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Leader: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. People: The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Leader: Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.” People: The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Leader: Let us worship God! Approaching God in Praise and Prayer HYMN OF PRAISE All People That on Earth Do Dwell OLD HUNDREDTH Section Leaders Nicholas Halbert, organ All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; him serve with joy, his praise forth tell, come ye before him and rejoice. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed; without our aid he did us make; we are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take. For why? The Lord our God is good, his mercy is forever sure; his truth at all times firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure. PRAYER OF CONFESSION The Rev. Dr. Jan Farley Everlasting God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son to take our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross. Yet we have rejected your gift of yourself, turning to gods of our own making and following pathways of our own choosing. In your mercy, forgive us, and enable us to share in Christ’s obedience to your will, and to share in the glorious victory of Christ’s resurrection. We pray through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON PASSING OF THE PEACE Pastor: May the peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. KINGDOM LIFE SONG Rejoice in the Lord Alway! Stephen Sturk Section Leaders Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, Rejoice. Nicholas Halbert, organ Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known, let your moderation be known unto all. The Lord is at hand. The Lord is at hand. Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, Rejoice. Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, Rejoice. Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, Rejoice. Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, Rejoice. And the peace of God, and the peace of God which passeth all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds, keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, Rejoice. Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, Rejoice. And again I say, and again I say, Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice! Offering Ourselves to God SILENT PRAYER, PASTORAL PRAYER, & THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. SONG Not One Sparrow is Forgotten William Hawley Section Leaders & Nicholas Halbert Not one sparrow is forgotten. E’en the raven God will feed; And the lily of the valley from his bounty hath its need. Then shall I not trust thee, Father, in thy mercy have a share? And through faith and prayer, my mother, merit thy protecting care? Receiving God’s Word WRITTEN WORD Luke 12:22-31 He said to his disciples, ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. Philippians 4:4-7 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. New Revised Standard Version Leader: The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. SPOKEN WORD The Rev. Dr. Jack W. Baca “The Blue Rocks Are Still There” Responding to God’s Word MUSICAL REFLECTION Elevation in C Major Cesar Franck Nicholas Halbert, organ AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Romans 8:28-30 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. HYMN OF COMMITMENT O God, Our Help in Ages Past ST. ANNE Section Leaders Nicholas Halbert, organ O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home! Under the shadow of thy throne thy saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defense is sure. Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame, from everlasting thou art God, to endless years the same. A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone; short as the watch that ends the night, before the rising sun. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its years away, they fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home!
