Founded by Muncie industrialist George F. McCulloch, it was subsequently purchased by Daniel G. Reid in 1904. The paper changed hands again in 1944 when it was purchased by Eugene C. Pulliam. In 1948 Pulliam also purchased The Indianapolis News, at that time the oldest newspaper in the city. Pulliam combined operations of the two papers with editorial and news operations remaining separate. When he died in 1975 his son Eugene S. Pulliam took over as publisher and remained there until his death in 1999. After The Indianapolis News ceased publication in 1995, The Indianapolis Star remained the only major daily paper in Indianapolis. In 2000 the Gannett Company acquired the paper leaving Indianapolis with no locally owned daily newspaper. During the 20th century photographers recorded people, places, and events for Indiana newspapers. Photographs have appeared in The Indianapolis News since before the turn of the 20th century and in The Indianapolis Star since its debut in 1903. The two papers had competing staffs of nearly 100 photographers covering Indiana until the two Pulliam papers merged in 1995. Sources: Charlie Nye; Joe Young. General Collection: TR820 .H667 1999 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Indianapolis_Star SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The collection contains a selection of photographs made for the Indianapolis News and Indianapolis Star newspapers between 1929 and 1982. The photographs were found in disorder so the processor arranged the dated photographs in chronological order. Most photographs in the collection are stamped on the verso with the photographer's names and sometimes newspaper articles are pasted on the verso also. The processor has listed the dates, names of individuals in the photos, and a brief description of the events. The subject matter is varied and includes; college and professional sports, politics and elections, society events, human interest stories, celebrities, the arts, and children and schools. The final folder in box 2 contains copies of Indianapolis News articles about James Whitcomb Riley in 1916 with the familiar image of Riley seated with a small dog on his lap surrounded by children. It is accompanied by a copy of a 1992 letter from Stephen Bedell Smith, former employee of The Indianapolis Star, concerning the Riley photo and Smith's work at the newspaper.
