I know that every one of you will have a wonderful time here this week. Program Chair John Bailey has put together an extraordinary agenda of performances, presentations, and workshops, featuring flutists from all over the globe, several of whom have never played at an NFA convention before! Just a few of the “big names” include Walter Auer, Göran Marcusson, Trudy Kane, Jennifer Gunn, Gergely Ittzés, Bonita Boyd, Robert Aitken, Denis Bouriakov, Jim Walker, Nestor Torres, Carol Wincenc, Amy Porter, Irmela Zart Dombourian-Eby Bossler, and Kathie Stewart, among many others. Dig into your program book to find the scores of other amazing performers! I also hope you will plan to join us at all our three ticketed meal events this year, which promise to be fun, informative, and interesting! The Gala Awards Dinner, on Saturday night, will honor and celebrate our two Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, famed pedagogue and flutist James Pellerite and world-renowned composer Katherine Hoover. On Saturday morning, the Teachers’ Breakfast, open to everyone, will feature Bonita Boyd, whose talk is entitled “Developing the Whole Artist: A Comprehensive Discussion.” This year’s Flute Lovers’ Lunch, with Göran Marcusson, on Friday, will also serve as a “sneak preview” to his Saturday night performance of the Mozart G Major Concerto, as he will touch on the details within the concerto’s phrases, choices of tempo, and thematic ideas and on how to execute Classical period gestures on a modern flute. We are especially excited to debut our convention app, available through the “Guidebook” app, for you to add to your smartphones and to explore. You can find a full schedule of events, personalize your agenda, and navigate the convention center and resort. We are confident that it will greatly enhance your convention-going experience! And be sure to keep your eye on all of the social media outlets—Facebook, Twitter (@NFAflute), Instagram (@nfaflute), and Snapchat (nfa_flute). We’ll update them frequently throughout the convention, and you don’t want to miss anything! There are so many people to thank—but especially John Bailey, and his Assistant Program Chair, Nicaulis Alliey; the entire NFA staff—Kelly, Kris, Vicky, Kate, Anne, and Brian; and our behind-the-scenes “convention appointees”—Cindy Anne Broz, Kim Goodman, Townes Osborn Miller, and Paula Gudmundson. These folks have made this convention happen, and we are all in their debt! So, have a great time, try to see and do everything, make new friends, keep the old, visit the exhibits, and just enjoy!
