APPENDIX - A THE WARDWISE DENSITY OF POPULATION IN DELHI Table A.l presents the wardwise density of population 7 98.6 46,079 467.33 in urban Delhi, based upon the population of different 8 53.8 38,051 707.26 wards as given in the Census of India of 1951 and upon 9 65.9 32,796 497.66 a field check of the area of the different wards undertaken by the Town Planning Organisation. As can be seen from 10 37.7 24,448 646.77 the Table, population densities in all parts of Delhi except 11 264.9 51,005 192.47 old Delhi are rather low. The average density in Old Delhi 12 813.4 120,829 148.54 amounted to 213.34 persons per acre, whereas the average 13 181.7 51,493 283.23 density in the rest of urban Delhi amounted to only 11.29 14 293.7 86,006 292.73 persons per acre. In other words, the population of Old 15 424.9 123,022 289.46 Delhi was, on an average, 17 times as densely settled in the 16 1,165.4 146,133 125.45 old city as in the remainder of the urban area. It should be 17A. 109.4 11,389 104.10 noted, moreover, that though the average density in the old city was 213 persons per acre, there were certain wards in 17B. 125.4 1,600 12.75 which it reached a figure of almost 700 persons per acre. In TOTAL 4,288 914,790 213.34 general, the most densely settled portions of the old city are B. New Delhi Municipal Committee— located within the walls of Shahjahanbad and particularly 1 5,943.6 77,063 12.96 in the neighbourhood of Jama Masjid. 2 5,036.1 32,900 6.53 3. Naval 1,706.8 30,672 17.97 Densities also vary somewhat in New Delhi with the H.Q. and Minto Road and Bengali Market area showing the highest Army H.Q. density and the area south of the government centre 4 1,189.7 28,124 23.63 showing the lowest. In other parts of urban Delhi densities 5 1,487.3 38,995 26.22 are somewhat more regular, though even there certain spots may be found in which densities are quite high—in a few 5A. 3,111.6 23,662 7.60 places as high as in the old city. But whereas the incidence 6. 2,095.3 31,797 15.17 of high densities is dispersed over large contiguous areas in 7. 433.2 13,101 30.19 the old city, the very densely populated areas elsewhere are TOTAL 21,004.8 276,314 13.16 confined to a few blocks only.
