Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Characterization of Materials in Nuclear Engineering with High-Energy Synchrotron X-ray Dr. Kun MO Postdoctoral Research Associate, Argonne National Laboratory, USA Date: January 5, 2015 (Monday) Time: 10:00 am – 11:00 am (Tea reception at 9:45 am) Venue: Room B6619 (MBE Conference Room), AC1 Abstract As a result of recent accelerated developments in synchrotron radiation techniques, various fundamental materials questions, which have been difficult to answer using traditional destructive examinations, have received solutions, sometimes by a single X- ray exposure. The main advantage of the synchrotron X-ray techniques stems from the unique characteristics of high intensity, extended spectral range, and high degree of polarization. The high-energy synchrotron X-rays with high brilliance can penetrate most materials and environments, and provide sufficient sensitivity to the atomic structures of materials. Nuclear materials research is a relatively new area for synchrotron radiation study. Some examples of application of synchrotron X-ray techniques to nuclear materials development are presented in this seminar. About the Speaker Dr. Kun Mo is a postdoctoral research associate at Argonne National Laboratory. He received his B.S. degree from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2004, M.S. degree from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2006, and PhD degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2011, respectively. He has been working as a nuclear software engineer developing nuclear design codes at China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Co. He has extensive experience in high- temperature mechanical tests, e.g. creep, fatigue, and creep-fatigue tests, etc. His current research interest is applying synchrotron radiation techniques to study different reactor structural materials and nuclear fuels.
