H E maj ority of travelers belong to two c ! lasses Those who , for a business or are personal reason , anxious to reach their ’ j ourney s end as soon as possible ; and those u to who are traveling for pleas re , and seek learn all they c an of the c ountry over whi c h Th c they j ourney . e latter lass are usually - e t c c provided with guide books , maps , . , whi h c des ribe the special features of the region . who n ot There are many, however, do thus u c s pply themselves with these adj un ts of travel . This chapter IS wri tten to supply those un p ro vide d h with more detailed accounts , wit a brief mention of what is to be seen from the car windows in a trip over N c R c the orthern Pacifi ailroad , its more prominent towns , ities , pleasure resorts , etc . The greater number of through travelers over the N orthern Pa cifi c e will take its trains ither at St . Paul or Minneapolis , the main eastern termini of the system . Usually , if connecting trains are on time , there will be several ho urs that c an be utilized in viewing the interesting sights in these splendid N orthwestern cities . St . Paul is the elder of con the two , and the capital of Minnesota . It has , in the past , been side r e d c c c as a ommer ial point rather than as a manufacturing enter , while in the latter respe c t Minneapolis has been in the lead . The mag ’ n i fi c e n t - water power at St . Anthony s Falls , in the early years of its l c c . existen e , brought the atter ity to the front in this line Both cities w c are , ho ever, rapidly extending their investments in the dire tion in whi ch each has been the weaker . Minneapolis has thus added to its c . apital in commercial enterprises , and St Paul has been augmentin g b c oth the number and variety of its manufa turing industries . - c d N As a pair of sturdy, well built ities , a cre it to orthwestern enter ( 7 ) 8 O F SKETCHES WONDERLAND . prise and pluck , the two form a combination hard to surpass . There has b c een , in the past, onsiderable senseless acrimony and j ealousy between c themselves . This is growing less , and will in time ease . The interest and destinies of the two are almost identical , and a puerile j ealousy should not be allowed to retard the growth of either . c c c of St . Paul is a very attra tive ity , and is apable being made one of “ most the most , if not the , beautiful city in the United States , if its people c only rise to the full appre iation of their opportunities . c f Mounds and hills abound in various parts of the ity, a fording a . R landscape unrivaled The Mississippi iver winds through the city, and ff - c forms , with its white sandstone blu s and tree lad hills , a very important feature of this landscape . Minneapolis stands upon gro und more level and regular than does its out sister city . It is much better laid , with broader streets , and has many . for fine parks The Mississippi also cuts it in twain , but being utilized its great flour and saw mills, loses most of its scenic attraction . This is for atoned by Lakes H arriet and Calhoun , which form a resort frequented by large numbers of people, and as beautiful as popular . The railroad follows the east bank of the Mississippi , after leaving c c c of E n these ities , to Little Falls , a manufa turing pla e good size . route , St . Cloud is passed . Beyond Little Falls the road winds through a pine and tamarac region c quite diverse from the open ountry along the river . D t At Staples , the line from uluth , Wes Superior , and Ashland is of reached . These cities are ports at the head the Great Lakes touched by N c i s h . on C e ua the orthern Pacifi system The latter an important port , q c megon Bay, in Wisconsin , for shipping Gogebi iron ore down the lakes . D West Superior , also in Wisconsin , and uluth , in Minnesota, are at the f o . Su extreme end Lake Superior, and the head of navigation West l D c perior, located upon a level p ain , and uluth , limbing up a rugged hill , an d are across the bay from each other , the very opposite in appear c c e ance . The rapid and re ent growth of these ities is well known . H re of the vessels the lakes , both sail and steam , bring large quantities of c c oal and merchandise , and arry back with them wheat , lumber, flour, and c - iron ore .
