Valletta, Malta & Out Islands I spent 8 hours flying from Tirana, Albania to Malta. This involved three flights. I think one flight would take at most 2 hours, but there’s no non-stop flight. I spent 7 hours touring Malta with my local guide Victoria. There is a lot to see on Malta. As proof of that, I took over 170 pictures. The capital of Malta is Valletta, which is where most of the hotels and interesting sites are located. We started out from my hotel in Valletta and the first place we went is a garden where I saw a statue of Winston Churchill (253). There is a lot of construction going on since Malta is hosting an EU meeting this fall. 270 shows one of many interesting street scenes. There are a lot of hills in Valletta and Victoria organized the tour to minimize going up and down hills. The photos from my hotel I sent last night were of Grand Harbor – more on that later. 280 and 287 show views of Marsa Mxetto Harbor. It is not all visible at one time and you have to do some walking to see the entire harbor, but the views are worth it. 318 shows the altar and part of the ceiling at St. John’s Cathedral, a truly beautiful baroque church. We then walked down to Grand Harbor and had lunch in an open air restaurant which had great harbor views. After lunch, we took a ferry to the Out islands. 347 shows Valletta from the harbor ferry while 358 shows the inner harbor on the Out island. 365 shows a beautiful commercial fishing harbor. 394 shows a beautiful ceiling in the Carmelite Priory in Mdina. 403 and 404 are taken inside the Mosta cathedral, another beautiful baroque cathedral. Like so many Malta churches, it has a fantastic ceiling and beautiful paintings. What makes Mosta unique is that it served as a bomb shelter in World War II. A German bomb went through the ceiling, hit the floor, but did not explode. No one was hurt by the bomb or falling plaster. A true miracle. Tomorrow, I fly to Rome. .
