In 2006/2007 a systemic renovation was completed on the HVAC system, Fire Alarm System and select electrical distribution equipment as required to accommodate the renovation. In 2011 a 10,543 square foot kindergarten addition and Judy Center suite was added to the Northwest side of the building bringing the building to a total of 85,743 square feet. In addition, approximately 1,543 square feet of the existing building was renovated as part of the 2011 addition project. No other additions or major renovations have occurred other than partial enclosures of the existing five open space pods. The building is primarily one story with a second floor loft over the media center. Administration is located at the front of the building, across from the main entry. The cafeteria/ gymnasium share a dividable space at the front of the school, next to the main entry. Five classroom pods surround the media center at the center of the school. Kindergarten classrooms and the Judy Center suite are located on the Northwest side of the building. The building is clad in brick masonry with aluminum windows and a low-slope built-up roof. The existing exterior wall of the building is primarily constructed with face brick, 1” air space, 1” rigid insulation, and 6” CMU. The majority of the building is steel frame with intermediate steel joists. The gym/ caferteria area utilizes bearing wall with steel joist construction. Based on the original Contract Documents, the main finished floor is at elevation 883.0 feet and the loft finished floor elevation is 893.67 feet. The roof steel is sloped for roof drainage. The majority of the building has top of steel between 13’-2” AFF to 13’-6” AFF. The building is currently sprinklered. Two portable classrooms are located on the Northwest side of the building. Scope The scope of the project includes enclosing the four classrooms within each of the five pods for grades 1-5 (20 total classrooms, 4 per grades 1-5) and providing lockers for each classroom. The five pods are generally identical with a common corridor providing access to the four classrooms. Lockers for each classroom are located within each of these corridors with the exception of the third grade pod. Lockers for the third grade pod are located in the main corridor adjacent to the third grade corridor. The lockers were located in the main corridor for this pod to maximize the size of the classrooms due to the limited flexibility of the existing floor plan in this area. The classroom pods will receive new finishes (including ceilings and flooring), doors, marker boards, lighting, power and data receptacles and casework. The existing boys and girls toilets and janitor closets between the classroom pods will be demolished and reconstructed. The current configuration extends the walls of the toilet rooms into the corridor and the corridor makes a jog around the toilet rooms. The reconfiguration will align the toilet rooms with the classroom walls and the main corridors will be straightened to allow better supervision of the corridors. The corridor floor area on the Media Center side that is being abandoned in the straightened corridors will be added to the Media Center. In addition, walls and doors will be constructed around the perimeter of the Media Center to fully enclose the Media Center which is currently open to the corridor. This will Hord Coplan Macht, Inc. Page 4 January 25, 2012 SCHEMATIC DESIGN SUBMISSION ROBERT MOTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CARROLL COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS OPEN SPACE CLASSROOM ENCLOSURES provide sound attenuation and privacy within the media center area. Reconfiguration of the Media Center plan and the enclosure of a Media Center Office and Workroom and new shelving will be included in the project as an add alternate. The enclosure of a portion of the Media Center for a Media/ Video/ Production Editing room will be included as part of the base bid. The area between the classroom pods and behind the toilet rooms will become resource rooms (two on each side of the building for a total of four). Teacher planning/ storage rooms will be located on each side of the Media Center and will be shared by two grades each. The existing third grade teacher planning/ storage room will be renovated. Materials The new partitions will be metal stud and impact resistant gypsum board, as has been done in the previous open plan conversion projects. Four new exterior doors will be installed in the existing walls for code required egress at the end of the classroom pod access corridors. Floors will be vinyl composition tile. Classroom doors will be wood to match the existing doors and will have half glass and sidelights. Hord Coplan Macht, Inc.
