A complete marine and nature reserve, where marine life, bird life and native flora can be seen in a pristine state, it is also a place of deep spiritual TRACKS & WALKS connection that offers a window on pre-European times. The Te Araroa Walkway stretches the length of New Zealand, and the path it travels through the Tutukaka Coastal area takes in the largest Kauri tree on the east coast, Tane Moana, as well as stunning coastal walks and native bush. The Buffalo Walkway in Tutukaka represents the story of the first settlers here, and the changing face of our harbour. The Tutukaka Coast has been named as second-equal best coastal destination in the world by National Geographic Traveler Magazine (November 2010). A panel of 340 travel experts rated our coast on its authenticity, it’s sustainability, and the guardianship, and also on the likelihood that it will WELCOME TO THE stay this way. L A W E V RAUHOMAUMAU TO WHALE BAY I S O R A grassy track follows the headland N D (WALKING TRACK) 45 MINUTES LOOP / RETURN WHANGAUMU out across the reserve where native BAY trees have been planted by local school- You will probably want to stay on the beach for a while, good BAY children. Seating is provided in several shoes recommended, somewhat steep if you access from spots; there are views to the left of the track of WILLIAM PARATA WALKWAY Pebbly Bay, at the north end of Matapouri Bay. the Poor Knights Islands. Accessing from the carpark at the end of Ringer Avenue, 30 MINUTES EACH WAY, STEEP The descent to the beach is a stepped and well maintained allows a loop route returning via Pebbly Bay and Matapouri CLIMBING TRACK, GOOD SHOES RECOMMENDED path, leading to a rocky/pebbly causeway across to Beach, or vice versa.
