TRAFFORD WEST LOCALITY HEALTH PROFILE JANUARY 2021 WEST LOCALITY: WARDS • Bucklow-St Martins: Second largest ward in the Borough. It is characterised by large areas of agricultural green belt land including Carrington Moss. Within the ward are a large industrial complex and Carrington Business Park. Within the south east part of the ward are the villages of Carrington and Partington and within the eastern area is the residential area of Sale. The northern boundary of the site is bounded by the River Mersey. The ward is home to the Manchester United and Manchester City Football Clubs training grounds. Bucklow - St Martins has three very distinct areas with pockets of high deprivation and isolated communities. • Davyhulme East: In the north of Trafford and is bounded to the north by the Manchester Ship Canal and the Bridgewater Canal. The ward is home to the Trafford Centre, separated from the residential areas by the M60, the historical Barton Aqueduct, which crosses the Manchester Ship Canal and Barton Swing Bridge. • Davyhulme West: Bounded by the Manchester Ship Canal to the west, Davyhulme waste water treatment works to the north and residential areas of Davyhulme and Flixton to the east and south. The ward is mainly residential with large areas of private open land along the canal edge and the Mersey Valley to the south east tip of the ward. Trafford General Hospital is located in this ward. • Flixton: Bounded by the Mersey Valley and the River Mersey to the south and is traversed by the Manchester to Liverpool railway line. Its population is concentrated in areas in the northern half of the ward; other areas are generally open and include two golf courses (William Wroe and Flixton Golf Course). • Urmston: Situated in the heart of the northern part of the Borough. It is split into three residential areas by the M60 motorway and a railway line. The Mersey Valley and the River Mersey form the southern boundary, with the residential areas of Stretford to the east and Flixton to the west. Within the ward are Urmston Town Centre and one of the five cemeteries of the Borough. Source: Trafford Data Lab, 2020 WEST LOCALITY: DEMOGRAPHICS • The West locality has an estimated population of 52,279 across the five wards (Bucklow-St Martins, Davyhulme East, Davyhulme West, Flixton and Urmston) (ONS, 2019). • Data at the ward level suggests that the five wards in the West locality have a higher proportion of 65+ years population r compared to Trafford average (ONS, 2019). • Wards in the West locality have a low percentage of BAME communities in Trafford (Census, 2011) • Bucklow-St Martins is the most deprived ward in Trafford (IMD, 2019) • Around 17.6% of children are living in poverty and 13.6% of people living in income deprived households in the West locality (ONS, 2019). PERCENTAGE (%) OF POPULATION AGED 65+ YEARS BY WARDS IN TRAFFORD (ONS, 2019) Bucklow-St Martins ward has the lowest percentage (15.3%) of population aged 65+ years in Trafford, followed by 19.6% in Davyhulme East, 20% in Urmston, 21% in Davyhulme West and 22.8% in Flixton. Figure Source: Trafford Data Lab PERCENTAGE (%)OF BAME POPULATION BY WARDS IN TRAFFORD (CENSUS, 2011) Urmston ward has the fourteenth highest percentage (7.7%) of BAME population in West, followed by 6.2% in Bucklow-St Martins, 6.1% in Davyhulme East, 4.5% in Davyhulme West and 3.8% in Flixton (ONS, 2019) Figure Source: Trafford Data Lab DEPRIVATION SCORES BY WARDS IN TRAFFORD (CENSUS, 2011) Bucklow-St Martins ward has the highest deprivation score in West, followed by Urmston, Davyhulme West, Davyhulme East and Flixton. (IMD, 2019).(Note: IMD scores are not absolute values so a score of 40 does not indicate twice the deprivation of a ward with a score of 20. Higher average scores indicate higher relative levels of deprivation. Data for Trafford shows high rates of A&E attendance, emergency and injury admissions in under 5 population. • Three years rolling average from 2017-2020 suggests that 21.1% of Reception year and 33.5% of Year 6 children are obese and overweight (Obesity Profile, 2020). • Percentage of reception year children with excess weight in Davyhulme West, Flixton and Davyhulme East are better than England average (statistically significant), whereas worse than the England average for Urmston and Bucklow-St Martins. • 1 ward in West is the Trafford wards with the highest percentage of Year 6 children with excess weight. • The percentage of Year 6 children with excess weight (33.5%) is higher than the average for Trafford as a whole (31.5%), but lower than the England average of 34.6%. Source: Obesity Profile, 2020 WEST LOCALITY: DISEASE AND POOR HEALTH • Limited data on disease and poor health is present at the ward level, with the most recent data available until the year 2018. • 20% of residents in the West wards reported a limiting long term illness or disability in the census (Census, 2011) • There is a mixed picture of lifestyle related ill-health in the West locality. • 45% more lung cancer cases during the period 2012-2016, applying age-sex-year-specific incidence rates for England to the ward population (Local Health, 2016). • During the period 2013/14- 2017/18: - 10.3% more admissions for alcohol related harm and the admission ratios across 3 wards were similar to the England average, except for Urmston and Bucklow-St Martins, which were statistically worse. - 32.4% more emergency COPD admissions and the admission ratios across all but one wards were higher (statistically significant) than England average. Admission ratio for Flixton was similar to England average. - 29% more emergency admissions for CHD and the admission ratios across al but one wards were worse than the England average. Davyhulme East was similar to England average. - 29.8% more emergency admissions for Stroke and the admission ratios across all wards were worse than the England average. HOSPITAL STAYS FOR ALCOHOL-RELATED HARM BY WARDS IN TRAFFORD (2013/14-2017/18) Area Value LCI UCI Urmston ward has 45.7% more hospital stays from alcohol-related harm, followed by Bucklow-St Martins (42.8%), Flixton (24.1%), Davyhulme East (23.1%) and Davyhulme West (21.8%). Life expectancy for males in Bucklow-St Martins is 4.8 years lower than Trafford and 3.9 years lower than England. - Bucklow-St Martins has the lowest female life expectancy of 78.6 years in females across all Trafford wards. Life expectancy for females in Bucklow-St Martins ward is 4.9 years lower than Trafford and 4.5 years lower than England. - Life expectancy for males is similar (statistically significant) to England average for Davyhulme West and Flixton, worse for Urmston and Bucklow-St Martin’s, but better for Davyhulme East. - Life expectancy for females is similar (statistically significant) to England average for Davyhulme West, Davyhulme East and Flixton, but worse for Urmston and Bucklow-St Martins.
