Com- patibility issues were addressed and bugs were Þxed. The user inter- face remained the same. Hardware and Software Requirements System AirPlay MP 4.0 runs on a properly conÞgured Avid Media Processor, running Macintosh¨ System Software 7.5.5. Disk Drives The conÞguration needs at least one of the following qualiÞed disk drives: ¥ 9-GB Avid MediaDrive ¥ 9-GB RMAG XL drive Boards These boards are required: ¥ Compression: Advanced JPEG Revision 10 or Revision 11a ¥ Video: Avid Broadcast Video Board (ABVB), with optional analog or digital video I/O board ¥ Audio: SA 4 4 ¥ SCSI accelerator: ATTO SiliconExpress IV single-ended SCSI adapter board Revision 10 or ATTO SiliconExpress 4D differential SCSI adapter board Revision 10 Storage One of the following devices for disk storage is desirable: ¥ AvidRAID MX-500 ¥ AVIDdriveª Fixed Rack-mount System Compatibility with Prior Releases AirPlay MP Release 4.0 reads AVR 70 media created in previous releases. It accepts bins from Releases 3.6, 3.11, 3.1, and 3.0. The following caveats apply to backward compatibility: ¥ Once you create media in AirPlay MP Release 4.0, you cannot open that media again in any version earlier than AirPlay Release 3.6. ¥ Bins and playlists from AirPlay Release 3.11 are compatible with AirPlay MP Release 4.0. However, media created in AirPlay Release 3.11 (AVR 26 media) is not compatible with AirPlay MP Release 4.0. You must rerecord the media. ¥ If you record new material into AirPlay MP 4.0, you cannot launch a previous version until you hide this new media by renaming the 5.x MediaFiles folder on each drive partition. You can use clips and stories that were created earlier than Release 3.0 by following these steps: 1. Delete the media Þles and save the project and bins on a 3.5-inch diskette. 5 2. Install AirPlay MP 4.0, following the directions in ÒInstalling the SoftwareÓon page 7. 3. Copy the bins from the diskette to your Avid Projects folder. 4. Batch record the clips and stories in AirPlay MP Release 4.0 to re- create the media Þles. For information on batch recording, refer to the AirPlay MP UserÕs Guide. Compatibility with Other Avid Products AirPlay MP Release 4.0 is fully compatible with Avid NewsCutter¨ Release 4.0. AirPlay MP Release 4.0 is compatible with Media Composer¨ Release 6.0 (using AVR 70 media). It is also compatible with Media Composer Release 6.5 (NuBus¨) and Release 5.6 (NuVista+¨), and MCXpressª for Macintosh¨, Release 1.5. Compatibility with ITU-R BT.601 (CCIR601) and SMPTE 125 The Avid Broadcast Video Board (ABVB) complies with ITU-R 601 and SMPTE 125M in that it samples Y at 13.5 MHz and the U and V signals at 6.75 MHz. Further, video is quantized with black at digital 16, white at digital 235, footroom below black down to digital 1, and headroom above white to digital 254. All these parameters are as speciÞed in ITU 601 and SMPTE 125M. To use NewsCutter in conjunction with AirPlay MP, the AirPlay MP system must be adjusted to the operating standard so that digital 235 produces a 100-IRE output. 6 Installing the Software The AirPlay MP Release 4.0 system is supplied with the software already installed. Continue to ÒDocumentation ChangesÓon page 17 if Release 4.0 is already installed on your system. If you are upgrading from a previous AirPlay release, follow the instructions in this section. To save a backup copy of the old version of AirPlay, create a folder called Old AirPlay on the Avid disk, then drag the old version of Air- Play Þles to the folder. You can use CompactProª to compact the Þles on diskettes. Updating the Macintosh System Software New Avid Media Processor systems automatically include Macintosh System 7.5.5. If you are upgrading an older system, you might need to update your Macintosh system software. Remove the following extension and control panels that System 7.5.5 automatically installed. They might cause problems with AirPlay MP: ¥ Apple¨ CD-ROM ¥ Apple Photo Access ¥ Color Picker extension ¥ IIci/IIsi monitor extensions ¥ Macintosh Quadra¨ AV Monitor extensions ¥ All PowerBook extensions and control panels ¥ SCSI Manager 4.3 from the extensions folder ¥ All QuickDraw GX¨ extension and control panels Installing the AirPlay MP Software To install the AirPlay MP software: 7 1. Quit all open applications. 2. Insert the Þrst 3.5-inch installation diskette. 3. Double-click the AirPlay Installer icon. 4. Select Click here to continue or press Return to exit the splash screen. The Installer dialog box appears. Avid Disk 5. Drag the AirPlay icon to the Avid Disk icon (the Macintosh hard drive). The installation starts. The Macintosh system ejects the Þrst disk and prompts for each disk in turn, using all disks. When the instal- lation is complete, a dialog box appears. 8 6. Click Restart to restart your Macintosh. Installing the AVIDinit Extension AVIDinit provides several functions to ensure that the ATTO Silicon- Express board communicates correctly with the storage system. AVIDinit also allocates additional memory for the system software, reducing the possibility that the system will run out of memory and display performance problems. c Do not install both AVIDinit and AVIDstartup on your system. Three versions of AVIDinit are provided. By default, the system installs AVIDinit_A. This is the correct init for AirPlay MP Release 4.0, if you are using an Advanced JPEG (Janus) board. Use the other inits for these conditions: ¥ Install AVIDinit _B if you are not using an Advanced JPEG board and are not using removable magnetic drives. ¥ Install AVIDinit_C only if you are using removable magnetic drives. Install the init by dragging the init icon from the Utilities folder on the Avid disk to the Extensions folder in the System folder. n Install only one version of init. Remove any inappropriate versions. 9 You must restart your system to launch the init. However, you can defer the restart until you Þnish the installations and conÞguration. Running Pro Tools The Þrst time you run your system, use the Pro Tools¨ software to conÞgure your audio hardware correctly. 1. Double-click your Utilities folder to open it. This folder is stored on your Avid disk. 2. Double-click the Pro Tools Setup icon. The Pro Tools Setup window appears. Slot will vary based on system configuration 3. ConÞgure the Pro Tools Setup window in one of the following ways: ¥ If you are using digital audio inputs, change the Sync Mode to Digital, the Digital Format to AES/EBU, and the CH 1, 2 Input to Digital. Select Digital as the Sync Mode only if the system will have continuous access to a digital sync signal. Any break in the sync signal will prevent successful system operation. 10 ¥ If you are using Analog audio inputs, conÞgure the Pro Tools Setup window as shown in step 2. However, choose the Card slot number that is being used for your system. 4. Click Recalibrate Inputs. 5. Click OK. Checking the Installation The AirPlay ConÞguration Checker checks for the required supporting Þles, control panels, and software each time you launch the software. You can display all information about the conÞguration, or only the information about conÞguration tests that did not pass: ¥ To display all the information, activate the ConÞguration Check window and choose Full Listing from the Edit menu or press kÐL. ¥ To display only logged problems, choose Brief Listing from the Edit menu or press kÐK. If INIT conßicts or hardware problems are found when the application is launching, a dialog box appears, similar to the following. ¥ Click Abort to stop the software from launching. 11 ¥ Click OK to launch AirPlay MP. The software will launch, but you might experience problems during operation.
