This will be primarily based at the Peterborough site but may occasionally involve some cross site working if the service requires it. These are new posts to join the existing 4 Gastroenterology Consultants with a specific remit to further develop and extend Gastroenterology and hepatology services in the region. The newly appointed Consultants will take part in out of hours GI Bleed Rota and on-call commitment is subject to negotiation. Duties and responsibilities The post holder will provide a high quality diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy service, a high quality outpatient service, including patient administration and manage gastroenterology and medical in-patients on the gastroenterology ward. On call commitment will be subject to negotiation with opportunity to take part in the General Medical on call if desired. The successful applicant will take part in an on call rota for GI bleeding, Out of hours, currently 1 in 8 weekends with time in lieu to ensure working time directive compliant. Candidates who wish to take part in the GIM medical rota will do so 1 in 15 with immediate senior review of all medical admissions in the acute area and post take ward rounds the following day as required. There is evening on call up until 10pm and weekend post take and ward cover shared amongst all acute and specialty physicians. There are 2 medical registrars on call at all times. The newly appointed consultants will have provision made for mentoring in the first year. The post holders will be supported by a GI secretarial Team, shared office space and will have access to shared PC with internet. There is a ward based system of care with specialty review throughout the hospital. There are approximately 24 physicians with an active expansion underway to facilitate 7 day working. 3 The fixed weekly expectation is likely to include: 2 outpatient clinics a week (general/ specialist interest- on average 4-5 new and 5-7 follow up patients) 3 endoscopy sessions To take part in Gastroenterology ward cover on a rolling weekly basis with daily ward rounds when on cover. Ten to twelve ward inpatient referrals a week which is usually reviewed by SpRs and Consultant on ward cover. In line with the Trusts standard policy the role will be7.5 fixed DCC sessions inclusive of MDT and X-ray meetings with 2.5 SPAs. Any applicants wishing to work a different number of PAs are still encouraged to apply or enquire as the Trust will accommodate additional DCC PAs by negotiation and requirement. Part time and job share applicants are welcome. Teaching and Audit The department has a long standing commitment to undergraduate, postgraduate and nursing education. Medical students come from both Leicester and Cambridge and the specialist registrars are on rotation with the East Midlands Deanery. The post holder would be expected to take an active part in medical education as the hospital has a reputation for teaching and training with links to both Leicester and Cambridge. It is specified as a Postgraduate Medical Education Centre in the region. Weekly medical unit meetings take part every Thursday morning and participation in these is required. Clinical cases, literature reviews and journal club are undertaken. Audit/Clinical Governance Audit and clinical governance are vital parts of the hospital and the successful candidate would be expected to take a leading role in clinical governance both within endoscopy but also in the hospital wide systems to meet NICE guidance, national audits and audit of their own practice and their peers. The post holder would be expected to lead on Audit and Governance to ensure compliance with all Trust processes. 4 Person Specification Job Title: Consultant in Gastroenterology Division: Emergency and Medicine Reports To: Clinical Lead/Associate divisional director for gastroenterology CRITERIA FOR ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS ADDITIONAL/USEFUL SELECTION REQUIREMENTS Qualifications MB ChB/MBBS or equivalent Higher qualification MRCP (e.g. MD, PhD) CCT in Gastroenterology (or equivalent or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or on the Specialist Register Medical Knowledge & Extensive training and experience in Evidence of ability to pursue Experience general medicine and independent research. Gastroenterology, including diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures Experience of ERCP diagnostic and therapeutic procedures Communications Ability to communicate with other Specific training in members/ grades of staff, patients, communications skills, families and General Practitioners. teaching etc Commitment to multidisciplinary work Planning Evidence of involvement in service Evidence of successful developments/ planning. implementation of new Evidence of leadership skills working patterns/methods Management Knowledge of corporate structure of Evidence of specific training NHS Trusts, the NHS plan and clinical in management (e.g. courses, governance practical experience) Other Requirements Full Registration and license to practice Member of Medical Defence with the GMC Organisation Demonstrates honesty, commitment and integrity 5 Compensation and Benefits Consultants are remunerated according to nationally agreed NHS pay scales and terms and conditions. Newly appointed Consultants may be eligible for reimbursement with the whole or part of the cost of their removal expenses, provided that the removal is necessary to comply with North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust’s requirements concerning the place of residence. General Conditions of Employment The appointee will enjoy terms based on the nationally agreed Terms and Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003. The successful candidate will be required to live within 20 miles of the Trust or 30 minutes travelling time when on-call. The appointee will be expected to cover for colleagues’ absence from duty on the basis of mutually agreed arrangements with the Department and with the Employing Trust. This is arranged by mutual agreement of consultant colleagues and approval of the Clinical Lead, in accordance with standard Trust and NHS regulations. It is essential that six weeks’ notice is given to allow for proper planning and prevent cancellations of patients' appointments/surgery. This includes all forms of leave. Leave is granted in line with Trust Policy and Specialty protocol. The Trust requires the successful candidate to have and maintain full registration with the General Medical and to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of a doctor as set down by the General Medical Council. All appointments are subject to satisfactory Occupational Health Clearance being obtained and a satisfactory DBS check. The appointment is exempt from the provisions of Section 4(2) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 by virtue of the Rehabilitation Act 1974 (Exemptions) Order 1975. Applicants are not entitled therefore to withhold information about convictions which for other purposes are "spent" under the provision of the Act, and in the event of employing any failure to disclose such convictions could result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Trust.
