Solved: The Ciphers in Bo ok iii of Trithemius's Steganographia Jim Reeds AT&T Labs | Research Florham Park, New Jersey 07932 [email protected] DRAFT: 26 March 1998 Abstract Bo ok iii of Trithemius's Steganographia written ca. 1500 contains hidden cipher messages within what is ostensibly a magic work. After almost 500 years these ciphers have b een detected and solved. Since 1606 it was known that similar ciphers were present in Bo oks i and ii. This has implications not only for the history of cryptography but also for the history of 16th century magic. Trithemius has b een considered one of the main gures in the rise of the o ccult movement in the 1500's, but it now turns out that the evidence is less clear. Quis divinabit, quid in hoc libro tertio Steganographiae scripsit & 1 scripturus erat Trithemius? 1 Johannes Trithemius and the Steganographia Johannes Trithemius 1462{151 6 is a man with at least three distinct rep- utations, the apparent contradictions among whichhave generated contro- versy for almost ve centuries. WehaveTrithemius the German Renaissance humanist, advisor to Emp erors, one of the most erudite b o ok collectors of Germany, author of more than fty b o oks himself, the founder of scienti c 2 bibliography. Then, there is Trithemius, one of the founders of the mo dern 1 science of cryptology, the author of the rst printed work on cryptography, 3 the Polygraphia of 1518. And nally, there is Trithemius the o ccultist, stu- dent of the Cabala, the mentor of Agrippa of Nettesheim 1486{1535, the author of an ambiguous mysterious demonological and cryptographic b o ok, the Steganographia, comp osed ca. 1499{1500, which circulated in manuscript among such p eople as John Dee 1527{160 8, Giordano Bruno 1548{1600, and Agrippa of Nettesheim throughout the 1500s b efore b eing nally printed 4 in 1606, and b eing placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1609. Much of this controversy centers around the intent of the Steganographia. Is it primarily an exp osition of cryptographic techniques disguised as angel magic, or is it primarily a magic work disguised as cryptography? Ostensibly the b o ok explains how to employ spirits to send secret mes- sages over distances. A large share of the b o ok is devoted to recitation of the \bureaucracy" of the various ranks of spirits: their names, numb ers, sub ordinates, the particular compass directions, times of days, planets, and constellations they are asso ciated with. Much of the b o ok is devoted to texts 5 of invo cations, by which the spirits' aid is obtained. In Bo oks i and ii there are also long turgid cover letters full of inno cent sounding pieties; in the shorter Bo ok iii there are tables of numb ers, whose columns are headed by zo diac and planetary symb ols. In Bo oks i and ii the way of sending a secret message is: write an inno centcover letter on a piece of pap er, invoke with prop er ritual angelic help by reciting suchwords as Padiel ap orsy mesarp on omeuas p eludyn malpreaxo. A spirit messenger or two will turn up. Hand over the cover letter. On receipt of the cover letter one's corresp ondent go es through similar angelic ritual, with similar but di erent magical words, and straightawayheknows the sense of the secret message. In Bo ok iii the way of sending a secret message is similar, with these di erences: the sp oken invo cation is de-emphasized and lacks the long strings of demonic names, much study of the current astronom- ical situation is required, reference must b e made to the sp ecial astronomical data appropriate to the particular spirits involved, one undertakes elab orate calculations, and there is no cover letter. One's secret message is conveyed without letters to one's corresp ondent, as if by telepathy. 2 Controversy over the character of the Steganographia b egan even b efore Trithemius nished writing it, with Trithemius's 1499 letter to his friend Arnoldus Bostius, describing the new b o ok he was writing, the Stegano- graphia. But Bostius had died by the time the letter arrived. His colleagues read and published its contents, which said that the b o ok would b e full of marvels, including over a hundred kinds of secret writing, a metho d for com- municating one's thoughts by re over a distance, a metho d for teaching rude uneducated p eople Latin and Greek, and a metho d for expressing thoughts to another while eating, sitting, or walking, without words, signs or no ds, and many other things which are not to b e divulged publicly.Trithemius, it was alleged, was either a liar or if he really could do these things an employer 7 of demons. In 1500, p ossibly in reaction to this charge, Trithemius aban- doned work in on the b o ok, but not, as the Polygraphia reveals, his interest in cryptography. Another letter, of 1509, from the alchemist and numerol- ogist Charles de Bouelles to Germain de Ganay also interested in alchemy, and a corresp ondentofTrithemius's, describ ed a 1504 visit to Trithemius, who had shown Bouelles his Steganographia. Sho cked by the strange names of spirits or demons, Bouelles asserted that the b o ok should b e burned and that Trithemius must have consorted with demons. This letter was published 8 in 1510, and the o ccult Trithemius's reputation was established. The Steganographia was not put into printuntil 1606, but as wehave seen, manuscript copies circulated during the 1500s, provoking b oth attack and defense by a wide variety of authors.The controversy intensi ed with the 1606 printing of the Steganographia and of a shorter work, the Clavis, 9 the latter presumably also byTrithemius or a con dant of his. The Clavis explained, in baldest co ok-b o ok fashion, how the ciphers of Bo oks i and ii of the Steganographia worked. The incantations were actually encrypted instructions for concealing a secret message within the cover letters. To read out the secret meaning of either, one selects a sp ecial subsequence of the letters, such as in the case of the incantation quoted ab ove every other letter of every other word: padiel aPoRsY mesarp on oMeUaS p eludyn mAlPrEaXo ... that is, primus apex ... Bo oks i and ii of the Steganographia contain a mind- numbing varietyofsuch examples, some combined with simple substitution 10 ciphers, almost all of them explained in the Clavis. The Clavis did not discuss the nature of Bo ok iii, which remained myste- rious. Of the 180 numb ered pages of the 1608 edition of the Steganographia, 3 159 are in Bo oks i and ii, leaving 21 in Bo ok iii, i.e., 12 of the whole. Bo ok iii contains a preface and just a single truncated chapter, in striking contrast to the dozens of chapters found in the earlier b o oks. Then in 1624 the erudite Duke August I I of Braunschweig{Luneburg pub- lished his monumental work on cryptography, the Cryptomenytices, under the 11 pseudonym Gustavus Selenus. Bo ok iii of Selenus's b o ok publicized the information in the Clavis, reorganizing the information to make it clearer. Selenus was unable to supply a cryptographic interpretation to Bo ok iii of the Steganographia, but in case some future reader might make sense of it, 12 he reprinted the entire Bo ok iii in his b o ok. Selenus's account of the Steganographia was followed by essentially all seventeenth century German b o oks on cryptography. These b o oks | whose titles often contain phrases like Trithemius vindicated | explain the Stegano- 13 graphia as cryptography and thereby acquit its author of magic. In one such b o ok, published in 1676 in Mainz, W. E. Heidel claims to have discovered the true cryptographic meaning to Bo ok iii, and presents it in the form of a series of cryptograms, which I repro duce in an app endix. It is easy to guess that Heidel was blung, hoping to gain the glory for guring out what 14 Trithemius was doing in Bo ok iii without actually doing the work. Thus the controversy centers on the 21 pages of the incomplete Bo ok iii. The mo dern scholarly ma jority or consensus opinion ab out the Stegano- graphia is expressed byD.P.Walker: There is little doubt that the rst two Bo oks of the Steganographia do treat of cryptography, and that the angels and spirits in them can b e satisfactorily explained as descriptions of the metho ds of encipherment.... But the Third Bo ok, which is un nished, do es not, like the other two, contain any examples of enciphered messages; one is told to say the message over the picture of a planetary angel at the moment determined by complicated astronomical calculations. It seems most unlikely that these could b e disguised directions for 15 enciphermentorany kind of secret writing. Therefore, Walker concludes, the work is primarily o ccult. This consensus view is also shared by o ccultists, according to whom Trithemius taught not 16 just cryptographic secrets to his esoteric pupils Agrippa and Paracelsus. A minority of historians followW.Shumaker in dissent, interpreting the 17 same evidence di erently.
