The Villager Villager No. 265 December 2017 This is the final edition of 2017 and all of us from the Villager Production and Delivery Team would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year. Thank you to everyone who supported and contributed to what was a very enjoyable and successful Villager Coffee Morning in October. Monies raised from the stalls, and additional raffle prizes generously donated by Motcombe Garage and the Community shop, helped make it a financial success. Once again the brave Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of the village will be running the annual Christmas Post delivering Christmas cards around the village for a donation (recommended 20p). The special post box will be in the Village Shop from the beginning of December through to the 23rd December. Last year we delivered over 300 cards around the village and even proved that we are excellent detectives – even tracking down someone while they were enjoying the delights of the Coppleridge – we would really appreciate if you could provide as much of the address as you can so we can work out the correct place to deliver it to. If we get it wrong, please could you put the card back in the Christmas Post post box in the Shop. Next term the Cubs and Scouts will be working on Astronomy, Cooking and hopefully doing some electronics. If you have any skills in these areas and would like to help for one or two nights (Tuesdays or Thursdays) passing on skills to the young people please get in touch! We have space for new starters in both Cubs (8-10.5 year olds, Tues 6.30 to 8.00pm) and Scouts (10.5-14 year olds, Thurs 7.15 to 8.45pm) – please get in touch if you would like to join! Beavers meet on a Thursday between 5.45 and 7.00pm and currently have spaces should any 6 to 8yr old wish to join. We work towards badges, last half term was outdoor adventure and this half term navigator. Play games and do craft activities... and generally have fun! Motcombe Village Magazine 265 Page 3 December 2017 Royal Free Hospital – Thanks to All A quick update for all those who sponsored Adrian Geal and Sue Browning in their successful completion of the Race to The Stones 100km Ultra Marathon back in July. Together with Adrian’s daughter Amy, they raised a fantastic amount of £5,237 towards Scleroderma research. We are doing this in a number of ways. Firstly, we regularly remind all parents, through our weekly newsletters, to use the village hall car park and walk their children from there. We also pay community members to supervise a "walking bus" which collects children throughout the village and promotes a healthy start to the school day. In addition to this, we have changed the morning routine for the whole school. This term we have introduced a staggered drop off period. Parents can drop their child at school anytime between 8:40 and 8:50, meaning that cars are no longer all arriving at the same time and remaining parked for a long duration all at once. If you have any further suggestions to help us improve this issue further, please contact the school office as we welcome ideas from the wider community. In class this term, our oldest pupils have been learning about World War Two and teachers have worked hard to bring history to life for the children. Pupils were lucky enough to spend a day at Nothe Fort in Weymouth where they completed an 'Evacuee Experience Day'. The children dressed as evacuees, were taught how to use ration books, cleaned clothes using 1940s equipment, experience an air raid inside a real Anderson shelter and much more! Our youngest pupils have only been in school for 3 months and have settled into school life extremely well. They are currently preparing for a Christmas play where they will share the story of Jesus' birth with their peers and family members. Christmas is a magical time in school and we are thoroughly looking forward to the events we hold both in school and in church during this time of year. This had been immediately remedied when discovered. SSE lighting demonstrated the type of street light available to use as replacements in the future; the anomaly of the County paying for some lights and the Parish for others will be looked into by DCC Cllr. Cattaway. There will be a trial of the proposed new lights. A new Parish Councillor has joined the team; Liam Stacey was proposed and seconded as a new Councillor and will be free to vote on issues once the appropriate paperwork has been completed.
