Edward Lear works in Public Collections and in other collections open to the public The purpose of this document is to give as complete a record as possible of Edward Lear’s works which are in public collections around the world and also those in institutions where researchers should be able to access them with permission. There are around 5000 such landscape drawings and many more finished watercolours and oil paintings. It would be a difficult task to list them all. So the method used has been to show, by each collection, the numbers of drawings, finished watercolours and oils, and in almost all cases the countries he depicted and in the case of drawings the year of travel. Section 1 lists Lear’s travels in chronological order. Section 2 provides the listing by collection. To use the document search facility (this pdf uses Adobe), go to Edit > Find, or to Edit > Advanced Search. Find will create a Find box on the screen. Type in a word and click Next. The first time that word appears should be highlighted in the text. Continue clicking Next to find progressively all its appearances in the document first in Section 1 and then in Section 2. Advanced Search will create a menu column on the left of the screen. Enter the word required and Search, and a drop down menu of all the word’s appearances should appear. These are not very helpful in themselves, but as each is highlighted, the same word will be highlighted in the document. It is only possible to search for single or consecutive words or dates. So for example by either method : - By entering a year, all works for that year’s drawings will be highlighted. (Do not include the months where shown) - By entering a country, all works depicting that country will be highlighted. - If entering a region within a country, do not enter the country name as well. The year and collection listings only refer in some cases to the specific region where Lear travelled. Note however that parts of Albania and Crete were not in Greece in Lear’s day, so search specifically for them as well as Greece to search all Greek sites. Palestine is the generic term used for much of the Near East (today’s Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Palestine). - Drawings (dwgs) appear against most entries in the collection list, but a search can be made specifically for finished watercolours (wcols), oils (oils), comic drawings (comic) or Tennyson drawings (Tennyson). - If you know an institution’s name, the search facility may help to locate it. This paper has been researched by Stephen Duckworth with Rowena Fowler. Not all these locations have identified works in public collections, particularly for his return visits to England and for his later years. The listing is however primarily included as it will assist the search facility into the main list, Section 2, which lists the collections themselves. As an example his first visit to Greece was in 1848, and using either 1848 or Greece in the search facility should find all relevant landscape drawings but only Greece would find oil paintings and watercolours as well, as these are either undated or Lear may have inscribed the date he did the work which might be much later, so Section 2 does not include such dates. Using Greece would however identify works from many travels there, not just in 1848. 1833 Northern Europe 1834 England 1835 England, Ireland (Aug) 1836 England (Lake District - Aug to Oct) 1837 (to July) England (Devon and Cornwall - June to July) 1837 (July on) Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy 1838 Italy (Bay of Naples - May to Aug) 1839 Italy (Rome and excursions) 1840 Italy 1841 Italy 1842 Italy (Naples, Sicily - Apl to May) 1843 Italy 1844 Italy 1845 Italy (Alban Hills and Volscian Mountains - Mar) 1846 England 1847 Italy (Sicily - May to July, Calabria - July to Nov) 1848 (to Mar) Italy 1848 (Apl to May) Greece (Ionian islands) 1848 (June to July) Central Greece and Athens 2 1848 (Aug to Sept) Turkey 1848 (Sept on) Greece, Albania 1849 (Jan, Feb) Egypt 1849 (Mar) Malta 1849 (Mar to May) Greece, Albania 1849 (June on) England 1850 England 1851 England 1852 England 1853 (to Nov) England 1853 (Dec) Egypt 1854 (to Mar) Egypt 1854 (Apl to Jul) England 1854 (Aug to Oct) Switzerland 1854 (Nov on) England 1855 (to Nov) England 1855 (Dec) Greece 1856 Albania, Greece (Mount Athos), Turkey 1857 (to Feb) Greece 1857 (Mar to Apl) Albania 1857 (May to Oct) England 1857 (Nov on) Greece 1858 (to Feb) Greece 1858 (Mar to June) Palestine 1858 (June to Aug) Greece 1858 (Sept to Oct) England 1858 (Nov on) Italy 1859 (to Apl) Italy 1859 (May to Nov) England 1859 (Dec) Italy 1860 (to May) Italy (Bay of Spezia – May) 1860 (June on) England 3 1861 (to May) England 1861 (June to Aug) Italy, Switzerland 1861 (Sept to Nov) England 1861 (Nov on) Greece 1862 (to May) Greece 1862 (May) Malta 1862 (June to Nov) England 1862 (Nov on) Greece 1863 (to May) Greece (Ionian islands) 1863 (June on) England 1864 (Jan to Apl) Greece 1864 (Apl to May) Crete 1864 (June to Nov) England 1864 (Dec) France, Italy 1865 (to May) France, Italy 1865 (June to Oct) England 1865 (Nov to Dec) Venice 1865 (Dec) Malta 1866 (to Apl) Malta 1866 (Apl to May) Greece (Corfu), Dalmatia 1866 (May to Nov) England 1866 (Dec) Egypt 1867 (to March) Egypt 1867 (Apl) Palestine 1867 (May) Italy 1867 (June to Nov) England 1867 (Nov on) France 1868 (to Mar) France 1868 (Apl to June) Corsica 1868 (June to Nov) England 1868 (Dec) France 1869 (to June) France 4 1869 (July to Nov) England 1869 (Dec) France 1870 (Jan to May) France, Italy 1870 (June to July) Italy 1870 (Aug to Dec) England 1871 (Jan to Feb) France 1871 (Mar on) Italy, England 1872 Italy, England 1873 (to Sept) Italy, England 1873 (Oct on) India 1874 (to Oct) India 1874 (Nov to Dec) Ceylon 1875 to 1876 Italy, England 1877 Italy, Greece, England 1878 Italy, Switzerland, England 1879 to 1888 Italy, England Section 2 - Edward Lear works in British Public Collections and in other collections open to the public This collection listing has the following sections : - United Kingdom – National, London, Rest of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales - Rest of Europe – France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands - United States - Rest of World – Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa Alphabetical order by place name is used except where the collection has a non-geographic name. Inclusion in this list of works by Lear does not mean they are necessarily on display at the relevant institution. Please check on access before visiting. It is not always clear from website and other descriptions whether works on paper are worked up watercolours, or Lear’s original drawings which often have colour washes. They have been shown in the most likely category. 5 This listing will be incomplete. Please send additions and corrections to Stephen Duckworth at [email protected] for inclusion in future revisions.
