CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY AMATEUR BOXING CLUB RISK ASSESSMENT FOR TRAINING AND COMPETITION WHO HAZARD RISK CONTROL MEASURE ACTION? All injuries in England Boxing bouts are covered by the club’s insurance Boxer Body strikes Major/minor • Body Protectors may be used in heavy injury sparring • Groin protectors are optional in N sparring but mandatory in competition • Strikes below the belt are illegal and uncommon in sparring Boxer Slips, trips and Major/minor • Boxers undergo a full warm-up and falls injury down before any training session N • Ring surface to be checked regularly for tears • Running outside in icy conditions should not take place • Club Committee to ensure that the facility and is clean and fit for purpose Boxer Injury from Major/minor • Trained coaches to always be present dropped impact injury to ensure safety whilst weightlifting N weight Boxer Injury from Muscle strains or • Correct technique is to be taught and weight training tears monitored to minimise injury. • All free weights to be left correctly N stored at the end of each weights session and used in line with gym guidelines. Boxer Equipment Major/minor • Club Committee to ensure necessary failure injury equipment checks and servicing has been completed and documented N • Committee to ensure that all equipment is used in the correct manner. Boxer Blood borne Cuts • Any boxer who suffers blood loss must disease immediately stop sparring, to stem the blood flow. • Gloves are to be worn when dealing with all blood related injuries. • Blood to be cleaned up from the N sparring ring. • All blood towels & tissues are to be disposed of in the correct manner • Disposable gloves and disposable blood bags are to be available. Inexperienced Injury due to Major/minor • Inexperienced boxers to be thoroughly boxers lack of injury instructed in the basics before being experience allowed to practice on the bags • They are not allowed to spar until they demonstrate a reasonable level of proficiency and control N • New members to be asked about any medical conditions when joining. • All boxers must undergo a medical by a registered practitioner before being given an England Boxing card Boxer Weight Cutting Major/minor • All boxers given ample notice of weight illness categories contested at competitions throughout the year • Any boxer planning on cutting weight consults a nutritionist. The nutritionist can plan the diet required, ensuring that it is balanced and does not compromise the safety of the boxer Boxer and Travel Major/minor • Covered under driver’s insurance Coach injury resulting • Covered under insurance from England from accidents Boxing (through Bluefin Sport) afforded by registration of each boxer, relating to travel to and from competitions .
