She who called herself the ‘lowly handmaiden of the Lord’ at the Annunciation, is now being glorified as the ‘Queen of the entire Universe’—queen of Heaven and Earth. Such is the will of God, who exalts the humble—to such an extent that the powers of heaven, earth and hell, must obey the commands of the humble Virgin Mary. St. Louis Marie de Montfort begins his masterpiece, A True Devotion to Mary, by acknowledging the following fact: “It was through the Blessed Virgin Mary that Jesus came into the world, and it is also through her that he must reign in the world.” (True Devotion, 1) He goes on to say, “For God has made her leader of His armies, keeper of his treasures, dispenser of his graces, worker of his wonders, restorer of the human race, mediatrix on behalf of men, destroyer of his enemies, and faithful associate in his great works and triumphs.” (TD, 28) Many saints in recent past have all concurred and agreed that to consecrate ourselves to Mary is to satiate the thirst of her Son. From St. Louis de Montfort to Padre Pio, from the three Fatima Children to St. John Paul II, I think all can and do agree with the simple words of the Missionary of Charity, Mother Teresa, “I believe, no Mary, no Jesus! This has changed my life.” Therefore, allow me to take this opportunity to encourage and invite you to attend our upcoming Marian Conference we will be holding here at our Lady of Peace on September 6-7, 2019. The purpose and objective is really very simple: honor our Blessed Mother’s Birthday and to make her more known, more loved, more honored. I am sure that this will have great effects on her children. For as St. Louis de Montfort says: “God wishes that His holy Mother should be at present more known, more loved, more honored, than she has ever been. Then they will see clearly, as far as faith allows, that beautiful Star of the Sea. They will arrive happily in harbor, following its guidance, in spite of the tempests and the pirates. They will know the grandeurs of that Queen, and will consecrate themselves entirely to her service, as subjects and slaves of love. They will experience her sweetnesses and her maternal goodnesses, and they will love her tenderly like well-beloved children. They will know the mercies of which she is full, and the need they have of her succor; and they will have recourse to her in all things, as to their dear advocate and mediatrix with Jesus Christ. They will know what is the most sure, the most easy, the most short, and the most perfect means by which to go to Jesus Christ; and they will deliver themselves to Mary, body and soul, without reserve, that they may thus be all for Jesus Christ.” (TD, 55) When Pius XII instituted the feast of the Queenship of Mary, he invited all Christians to “draw near to the throne of grace and mercy of our Queen and Mother, to ask her for help in adversity, light in obscurity, and relief in suffering.” He encouraged everyone to “ask grace from the Holy Spirit, to make an effort to hate sin, to be free of its slavery, so as to be able to render the Queen, who is so great a Mother, constant obedience, fragrant with filial devotion.” (Pius XII, Ad Caeli Reginam, n. 48) I think all of us would agree that sometimes that the darkness of the clouds around us can be too much, which is why we must turn to Her. Allow her to be your guide, your mother, your Queen. St. Bernard of Clairvaux, whose memorial we also celebrated this week, encourages us to remain close to her. He says, “In danger, in distress, in uncertainty,” he says, “think of Mary, call upon Mary. She never leaves your lips, she never departs from your heart; and so that you may obtain the help of her prayers, never forget the example of her life. If you follow her, you cannot falter; if you pray to her, you cannot despair; if you think of her, you cannot err. If she sustains you, you will not stumble; if she protects you, you have nothing to fear; if she guides you, you will never flag; if she is favorable to you, you will attain your goal . .” (Hom. II super Missus est, 17: PL 183, 70-71). Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace in time of need. For, as we know, to draw nearer to her is to draw nearer to her Son. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 W O L P!
