In the 2013-2014 Rotary year, our theme, and my challenge to you, is Engage Rotary, Change Lives. That’s where it begins—but not where it ends. Being a Rotarian is a commitment that extends into so many aspects of our lives: our work, our family, our interactions with others, and the values we hold dear. All of us came to Rotary to get involved, and to make a difference. We were invited into our clubs because Rotary knew we were capable; we chose to join because we decided to rise to that challenge. In Rotary service, as in just about everything else in life, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. If you only put in a token effort, you won’t accomplish very much, and you won’t find very much satisfaction in what you do accomplish. But when you make the decision to truly engage Rotary—to bring Rotary service and Rotary values into every day of your life—that is when you start to see the incredible impact that you can have. That’s when you find the inspiration, the excitement, and the power to truly achieve. In the 2013-2014 Rotary year, our theme, and my challenge to you, is Engage Rotary, Change Lives. You’ve chosen to wear a Rotary pin. The rest is up to you. Sincerely, Ron D. Burton RI President (2013-14) RI Director (1998-2000) Rotary Foundation Vice Chair (2008-09) and Trustee (2006-10) 6 District Governor’s Message District Governor Anneas Balt and District Governor Ann Valery Balt Dear Rotarians, Rotary Anns, Members of Inner Wheel and Rotary Friends Rotarians in D9400 make a valuable contribution and we all take Rotary Service forward in a meaningful role. Without members, our outstanding organization would not survive and I am passionate about increasing membership during the next 12 months. We can only achieve this if every Rotarian asks a friend, colleague or family member to join! Our Membership Committee will be working hard to guide clubs to increase their numbers. If every Rotarian introduced one member to Rotary this year, our numbers would double! Each one of us is responsible for promoting the Rotary brand and we need to take our existing brand into sharper focus and share what Rotary does locally and internationally. The 2013-2014 Rotary Foundation’s goals include completing the job of eradicating polio, launching the Future Vision grant model, engaging Rotarians in innovative projects, creating partnerships, and building ownership and pride in the Foundation. One of Rotary International’s major goals is the ‘End Polio’ campaign – we are almost there and with your continued support, we will succeed. Every Rotarian, and every Rotary leader, is a cog in the Rotary wheel. Our success is measured on what we can do collectively. We need to reuse the successful achievement strategies and plans and find new avenues and ideas of doing things differently. We will continue to impact everyone but we need to ensure that our investment is meaningful. Our time, experience, expertise, knowledge and hands-on approach will continue to meet the needs over time. Valery and I look forward to visiting your projects and learning about the wonderful work that you all do. Rotary’s New Generation programmes has changed the lives of thousands of youngsters. Rotarians have given the youth new perspective on what it takes to be an effective leader. By providing tools, training and guidance, we can encourage young people to be responsible leaders in their high schools, local communities and beyond. 7 Our youth want to be cultivated and challenged and we should stimulate the willingness to help them develop their talents. If they practice and explore communications skills, both verbal and nonverbal; they have a good start! Together, we can promote a commitment to good citizenship. Internet and social media plays a huge role in our current lives and we need to use this method to promote our brand, projects and goals. Consider including this method of communication in your club. By engaging Rotary, we will change lives. We also need to change the way we work, the way we talk Rotary and the way we engage. Valery and I look forward to meeting you all. We are excited about the 2013-2014 Rotary year and making new friends. Meeting existing friends again will allow us to engage in old times and share moments of how things have changed. We will Engage Rotary and Change Lives as we go along. We need to Rethink Rotary at all times. When we change circumstances, we change our thinking and subsequent actions. In the long run, we shape lives, and we shape communities. Engage also means to serve under a term of contract. For 12 months you have the reins to demonstrate your leadership abilities and instill the Four-way Test amongst all Rotarians in the District. You will be showing the way forward being fair to all; making new friends as you go along and enjoying your term because as the saying goes: “Time flies when you are having fun.” By leading D9400, you will both Engage Rotary and Change Lives. You can rely on our co-operation and support. We look forward to your new plans for the district. Your enthusiasm is contagious and it will definitely bear fruit and Change Lives in the district. Best wishes Annie and Hennie 120 Honiball Street Rynfield, Benoni P O Box 25443, Lakeside Mall, 1527 Email: [email protected] Contact details: (w) +27 (0) 11 425 3205 (h) +27 (0) 11 849 2873 (c) +27 (0) 82 550 0806 (Annie) (c) +27 (0) 78 5 65 90 (f) +27 (0) 11 425 3256 9 District Governor Elect Ann’s Message District Governor Elect Ann Elaine Stathacopoulos Dear Anneas and Val As you have been selected to lead District 9400 for the Rotary 2013-2014 year I know that your commitment will uphold the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self”. As you Engage Rotary, so you will Change Lives. Through your guidance, clubs will be encouraged to work with communities to make a difference to those whom we serve. If we can help the youth to grow into responsible, educated and healthy adults, the reward is that they will someday make contribution to the communities from which they came. They will hopefully enhance the quality of life in these communities, and then give back to them. They too will change lives! As Rotarians, Rotary Anns and Inner Wheel Members, we get satisfaction and rewards from engaging with the needy. We all have the responsibility to support those in need; to do what we can – and we can do a lot – to raise the quality of life and to level the playing field for disadvantaged communities. I wish you both a successful and rewarding year in office as we all go forth to Engage Rotary and Change Lives.
