Level A1 is the basic "breakthrough" level, which means that someone "can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type; can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has; and can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help." The aim of the orientation is to prepare students for their studies at the university and to offer an introduction to German life and civilization. The course contains German language classes plus workshops on different topics, such as language, literature and music. In addition the orientation offers an extensive cultural program, such as excursions to Trier - the oldest city in Germany- or to Marksburg castle, a medieval castle on the Rhine River. Students will also be assigned a German buddy who will introduce them to the university and city from the perspective of a local student. Our office will assist the students with administrative procedures such as enrolment, insurance and residence permit matters when they are in Bonn. Overall Structure of the Program: During the semester, the flexible program structure and the different course offerings of the Bonn program give Waseda students the opportunity to find a tailor-made study abroad program. There is only a limited number of apartments available. University of Bonn Intensive German language, cultural immersion CS-L: 2019-20 Opportunities for Learning Through Experience 1. German-Japanese Language Exchange Language learning is an important aspect of the program. In order to enhance the formalised learning effects of classroom course work, practising the newly acquired skills is all-important. The program will, therefore, provide an opportunity for doing just that in contact with German students learning Japanese (“Sprachtandems”). Beyond the aspect of language training, a cultural exchange between Japanese and German students will be a beneficial side effect. 2. Social and cultural program for international students In addition to academic education, first-hand experience of German culture and society constitutes a vital part of the program. Therefore, the social and cultural program is designed to make the participants’ stay in Germany as informative and rich in experience as possible. The activities comprise various trips and excursions (incl. a one-week excursion to Berlin) and social events. They are open to all international program students and thus provide a very good opportunity to interact with fellow students from all over the world. Each student will also be assigned a German student as a buddy to help them get along in Bonn and at the University during their first semester, especially during the initial weeks in Bonn. 3.
