New Hampshire Public Radio is a noncommercial, statewide news and information service with 170,000 weekly listeners, 140,000 unique website visitors monthly, 300,000 monthly website page views, and 19,000 contributing households. NHPR delivers news, information, analysis, arts, and entertainment programming to listeners across the state and region. NHPR broadcasts signature programs from NPR, PRI, and American Public Media including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Here and Now, News from the BBC, and Marketplace as well as entertainment programs such as Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me, Car Talk, Studio 360, Radiolab, and The Moth. In addition, NHPR produces three original shows, The Exchange, a public affairs call-in program; Word of Mouth, a magazine format show that focuses on new ideas and trends in arts and culture, education, science, and technology; and Outside/In, a show about the natural world and how we use it, as well as several short form programs and podcasts. The station’s award winning newsroom has ten reporters who produce stories for the New Hampshire broadcast of Morning Edition and All Things Considered and includes an investigative news unit, State of Democracy. NHPR also operates a classical music service, Classical New Hampshire. NHPR is in the final stages of a $5 million campaign. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The Vice President of Development reports to the President & CEO, Betsy Gardella. PRINCIPAL OPPORTUNITIES Now is an exceptional time to join New Hampshire Public Radio. NHPR is a statewide, multi-platform network bringing award-winning local content, national and international news, and superlative cultural programming to all corners of New Hampshire; the bordering regions of Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont; and beyond. With its supportive leadership and committed and engaged Board of Trustees, NHPR is financially sound and rich in talent. The VP of Development will have the opportunity to continue to build a strong team as the organization grows and concludes its $5 million campaign. New Hampshire ranks as one of the top five states for quality of life with low crime, no state or sales tax, and a true four season experience with mountains, beaches, beautiful lakes, great hikes, skiing, and historic attractions. Concord ranks as one of the top five capitals to live in. Centrally located, it is approximately an hour from Boston, the White Mountains, and the coast. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES The Vice President of Development is responsible for leading and managing several of the station’s revenue departments: Membership, Major Gifts, Events, and Grants. The VP leads the development team in the design and implementation of an integrated fundraising, communications, and outreach strategy to meet the revenue needs of the organization. In partnership with the President/CEO, the VP helps manage the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees and works closely with all board members on development efforts. This member of NHPR’s senior management team will partner with the President/CEO, trustees, NHPR staff members, and other constituents across the state, successfully leveraging all resources to implement fundraising plans, enhance the NHPR brand locally, and strengthen the public radio community nationally. Furthermore, the Vice President of Development will: ! Oversee the Membership Program to increase new member participation, donor retention, and overall gift revenue, and ensure sustained giving program targets are reached. Lead staff to maximize productivity, creativity, and financial results via direct mail, electronic mail, and on-air fundraising efforts, ensuring that all communications reflect strategy and guidelines. Develop and implement new strategies for revenue generation, including web-based initiatives. ! Provide oversight of the Major Gifts Program including prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship as well as goal setting and record keeping. Identify opportunities for special campaigns, such as operating, special project, endowment, capital, and station acquisition initiatives. ! Oversee Foundation, Corporate, and Government Grants Program. Manage the grants officer and work closely with programming staff to identify special projects and other funding opportunities. Ensure grant compliance, including reporting, for all institutional gifts. ! Guide NHPR’s Planned Giving Program, keeping donors and prospects informed of NHPR’s needs now and in the future and encouraging bequests, charitable gift annuities, and other planned giving 2 vehicles. Oversee the development of planned giving marketing strategies to families, trust and estate attorneys, wealth managers, and investment advisors. ! Participate in NHPR’s strategic planning process, identify fundraising implications, and lead development team’s implementation. ! Oversee creation and execution of special events and projects to maximize visibility and revenue. ! Work with President/CEO to secure corporate sponsorships for special projects and other initiatives as appropriate. ! Develop public relations materials and communications to enhance NHPR’s image with members and nonmembers. Promote fundraising programs and increase brand visibility. ! Recruit, manage, and evaluate the development team consistent with NHPR’s values. Guide the professional development of staff and ensure that they stay abreast of trends that may impact fundraising efforts. ! Oversee fundraising recordkeeping systems ensuring data accuracy, donor privacy, acknowledgement and recognition, and timely reporting. ! Work with President/CEO and VP of Operations and Finance to develop annual NHPR budget, and develop and manage departmental budget. ! Attend public radio conferences and meetings, as appropriate. ! Participate in station-wide initiatives, as needed. ! Represent NHPR to the public radio community nationally and maintain strong relationships with relevant organizations. ! Serve as liaison with NPR on collaborative fundraising initiatives. KEY COLLEAGUES Betsy GardelLa President & CEO Betsy Gardella is the President & CEO of New Hampshire Public Radio. Since assuming her position in the fall of 2005, NHPR has completed a successful $6.5 million Capital Campaign, constructed and moved to a new state-of-the-art broadcast facility, launched a new daily show about arts and ideas, Word of Mouth, and expanded its newsroom. NHPR produces several podcasts including The Ten Minute Writers Workshop and Primarily Politics. The listening audience averages 170,000 weekly listeners; monthly page views 300,000; and monthly unique visitors 140,000. Currently, Betsy is leading a $5 million campaign to expand locally produced news and programs including an enterprise journalism unit called State of Democracy; production of a weekly show and podcast called Outside/In about the natural world and how we use it; and New Hampshire Commons, a community engagement initiative including local reporting and expanded arts coverage. The Campaign went public in November 2015; $4,005,000 has been raised to date. Before coming to New Hampshire, Betsy served as Executive Vice President and COO at WNYC Radio in New York City, and consultant to Minnesota Public Radio, Nashville Public Radio, WAMU, Public Radio Exchange, Development Exchange Inc., Developing Radio Partners, New York University, and Station Resource Group. Prior to her career in public media, she worked in the arts for the New York Shakespeare Festival, National Dance Institute, Alliance of Resident Theaters/New York, Playwrights Horizons, and the American Center in Paris. 3 In September 2015, Betsy completed her second term on the NPR Board of Directors and the NPR Foundation. She currently serves as a Director of PRX, the Public Radio Exchange; is on the Stay Work Play Advisory Board; and is an Advisor to the Business School of Southern University of New Hampshire. She is a graduate of Boston University; earned a Masters degree from the University of Maryland; and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts and Letters from St. Anselm College. Scott McPherson Vice President of Operations and Finance Scott McPherson is the Vice President of Operations and Finance at New Hampshire Public Radio. He is responsible for the business and technical operations of NHPR, including engineering, information technology, finance, and facilities. He joined the station in 1995 as producer of Perspectives, a daily half-hour interview program. In October 1995, he helped launch The Exchange with Laura Knoy. While at NHPR, Scott has also served as News Editor, Director of Operations, and Assistant General Manager. Among the projects Scott has led are the design and construction of NHPR’s new 20,000 square foot state-of-the-art broadcast center and the expansion of its transmission facilities across the state, extending its reach by more than 500,000 people. Prior to coming to NHPR, Scott worked as a newspaper reporter covering politics, local government, and police and fire news for newspapers in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
