He constantly fears growing old without ever achieving anything. Walking through his cornfield one evening, he hears a voice whispering, "If you build it, he will come". He sees a vision of a baseball diamond in the cornfield and the great "Shoeless Joe" Jackson (Ray Liota) standing in the middle. Ray believes if he builds a baseball field, Shoeless Joe, can play baseball again. Annie is skeptical but agrees to him plowing under part of their corn crop to build a baseball field knowing the financial hardship it will bring. As Ray builds the field, he tells Karin about the 1919 Black Sox Scandal. Several months pass, and just as Ray is beginning to doubt himself, a ball player appears one night, whom Ray recognizes as Shoeless Joe. Meanwhile, the voice returns and urges Ray to "ease his pain." But who's pain is he meant to ease? What did you do about it? Do you believe that there is a spiritual realm that influences our world? If you answered yes, how would you define this realm? R E E L D I A L O G U E . Simply sharing a request and a promise, 'If you build it, he will come.' Words that would start Ray on a mission to see what will come if he obeys this spiritual command. How do you explain the 'supernatural' things that occur in your life? Would you credit them to a realm outside of the world as we know it? Why or why not? For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.- Ephesians 6:12 What motivates you to do things? Ray has to come to terms with the motivation that drove him to plow under his field, to build the baseball diamond, to drive to Boston and everthing else he does in the film. Yet, when he is pushed he has to come to terms with the very thing that drives him to follow the leading of the spirit. When it comes to following you intuition, your conscience or the leading of God, what is your motivation? Does serving others play a role in these decisions? Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, - Colossians 3:23 C u r t a i n c l o s e s : F i n a l q u e s t i o n Reconciliation The heart of this film is not to be a tourism advertisement for Iowa or even to explain heaven, but to show the importance of reconciliation. Ray and John Kinsella needed to find that moment to build into their troubled relationship. The Field of Dreams provided a place to ease that pain. Are there relationships that you need to reconcile? How is your relationship with God? What do you think you can do to fix these connections, if they need mending? R E E L D I A L O G U E .
