The wine show continues to bring both influential national and international judges to the Limestone Coast, provide a benchmark for our local wines and be a great occasion for all the wine community to get together once a year for the awards ceremony. The last year has been another of extremely challenging conditions for wine sales in particular and flowing on from that, grapes sales at sustainable pricing. The end of the mining boom and improved financial conditions in the USA has seen a drop in the value of the Australian dollar from parity to $0.70, this has already stimulated some export sales, and we are optimistic this will gain traction over the coming year, providing some light at the end of the tunnel. The proposed use of fracking by Shale gas exploration companies, continues to be the on-running major issue for the Council. Stuart Sharman and myself presented to the SA Government Natural Resources Inquiry into Unconventional Gas (Fracking) in the S.E., in the first day of presentations of the inquiry. We focused on the value of the existing wine industry in the S.E. and other food industries that rely on high quality water, and what was at risk. Pete Balnaves with Fraser Bell, and Glen Harrington presented on behalf of the Coonawarra Grape and Wine Inc, looking at basement rooted fractures ( ie fractures that join basement rock at 4 kms down with the surface) and the gap between the legislative acts that regulate mining and water resources. Allen Jenkins and the head of International Marketing for TWE also presented on the importance of the Limestone Coast to the Treasury portfolio. We are co-operating with the AWRI and SAWIA on their presentations due in November. The LCGWC Tech sub-committee has again had a busy year under the direction of Ben Harris. The Tech committee with AWRI presented a very successful and informative seminar on Climate Adaption in Penola last November, with Professor Tim Flannery giving the opening presentation. The AWRI also did a follow-up seminar on strategies for adaptation to climate change in February. Following on from this I attended on behalf of the LCGWC a climate change adaptation strategy day put on by the NRM board in conjunction with SELGA and Rural Development Australia LC, in Mt Gambier This involved local town councils, a wide range of local industries, and government departments, emergency services and police. It is very gratifying to see local and state government in South Australia is taking this issue seriously and pushing ahead with planning for the many issues that will arise from warming. Lastly I would like to thank all the wine show committee who work all year to bring the show to fruition, as well as their employers who make them available to volunteer. I would also particularly thank the sponsors, many of whom have been long term supporters and whose funds underpin the show.
