BIBLIOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICAN MINOR NATURAL HISTORY SERIALS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN LIBRARIES BY MARGARET HANSELMAN UNDERWOOD Anm Arbor llniversity of Michigan Press 1954 BIBLIOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICAN MINOR NATURAL HISTORY SERIALS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN LIBRARIES BY MARGARET HANSELMAN UNDERWOOD Anm Arbor University of Michigan Press 1954 my Aunts ELLA JANE CRANDELL BAILEY - ARABELLA CRANDELL YAGER and my daughter ELIZABETH JANE UNDERWOOD FOREWORD In this work Mrs. Underwood has made an important contribution to the reference literature of the natural sciences. While she was on the staff of the University of Michigan Museums library, she had early brought to her attention the need for preserving vanishing data of the distribu- tion of plants and animals before the territories of the forms were modified by the spread of civilization, and she became impressed with the fact that valuable records were contained in short-lived publications of limited circulation. The studies of the systematists and geographers will be facilitated by this bibliography, the result of years of painstaking investigation. Alexander Grant Ruthven President Emeritus, University of Michigan PREFACE Since Mr. Frank L. Burns published A Bibliography of Scarce and Out of Print North American Amateur and Trade Periodicals Devoted More or Less to Ornithology (1915) very little has been published on this sub- ject. The present bibliography includes only North American minor natural history serials in the libraries of the University of Michigan. University publications were not as a general rule included, and no attempt was made to include all of the publications of State Conserva- tion Departments or National Parks. I am greatly obliged to the late George Seth Guion of New Orleans, Louisiana, who was very generous in making available his fine library of early and scarce ornithological publications. Since his death, the University of Michigan has fortunately been able to purchase his libra- ry. Mr. Guion's catalogue of his library with notes and annotations has been a very valuable source of information and is credited to him in the many instances where it has been used. Additional information has come from a wide variety of sources. Libraries and bibliographies have, of course, been used to as great an extent as possible, but, because many of these minor journals had so brief and precarious existence with often irregular issues and changes in titles, publishers, and editorial policy, the search for information for adequate collation has not infrequently been long-drawn-out and tortuous. I am grateful to many persons who have provided data or at least have been willing to answer correspondence and provide the name and ad- dress of an ex-editor or some member of a local natural history society from whom information could be obtained. A number of col- lectors of natural history journals have also been very helpful in sup- plying information about copies and runs in their possession. Annotations have been made by the following persons: Dr. Pierce Brodkorb, Assistant Professor of Biology, University of Florida; Robert M. Mengel, graduate student in the Museum of Zoology, Univer- sity of Michigan; Dr. Robert W. Storer, Assistant Curator of Birds in the Museum of Zoology and Instructor in Zoology, University of Mich- igan; Dr. Laurence C. Stuart, Associate Professor of Zoology and Associate Biologist in the Institute of Human Biology, University of Michigan; Dr. Josselyn Van Tyne, Curator of Birds in the Museum of Zoology and Professor of Zoology, University of Michigan, and Dr. Charles F. Walker, Associate Curator of Reptiles and Amphib- ians in the Museum of Zoo1og;y and Assistant Professor of Zoology, University of Michigan. I wish to thank Dr. J. Speed Rogers, Director of the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, and his predecessor, Mr. Frederick M. Gaige, for their indispensable assistance and encouragement throughout this undertaking. I also wish to express my appreciation to Dr. Warner G. Rice, former Director of the University of Michigan Library, for his sug- gestions, which have improved the manuscript. Margaret Hanselman Underwood EXPLANATIONS In addition to the main entry the information listed includes, wherever possible, frequency of publication, changes in title, editors, publishers and place of publication, the numbers published, whether listed in Burns, Bibliography, and the holdings of the libraries of the University of Michigan. The form of entry generally follows the Union List of Serials and the University of Michigan catalog. In case of several changes in title for the same serial, the last title is used with cross references from the previous titles. Usually, the paging for the volume as a whole is indicated. Wherever this was impossible or not feasible, separate paging for individual numbers is given. Brackets are used whenever the first or last page is not numbered but is included in the paging, i.e., ,1, -20. The paging if numbered includes only the first and last pages of a number, i.e., 1-20; if the pages are not numbered, the total number is indicated, i.e., 20 pp. The open entry is used for serials being currently published, i-e., vol. 1- ; date - . Burns = A Bibliography of Scarce or Out of Print North American Amateur and Trade Periodicals Devoted More or Less to Ornithology, compiled by Frank L. Burns.
