Withabout170species(Wang,1996;Norrbometal., Hereonlythemajorcharactersarelistedandmore 1999;KorneyevandDirlbek,2000),Tephritis isthesixth completelistsofcharacterscanbefoundinFreidbergand largestgenusofTephritidaeandthirdlargestgenusinthe Kugler(1989)andMerz(1994).Twoorbitalsetae, Tephritinae.Althoughthegenusisknownfrommost anteriorsetaacuminateanddark(brownorblackish), zoogeographicregions,themajorityofspecies(about posteriorsetausuallylanceolateandpale(whitishor 120)arePalaearctic.Themostcomprehensivekeyto yellowish;in2speciesbrownorblack);2darkfrontal speciesisHering’s(1944),whichisoutofdate.Modern setae;firstflagellemore1.5-1.8timesaslongashigh; keystospeciesforseveralcountriesareavailable(e.g. probosciscapitate;dorsocentralsetasituatedonor FreidbergandKugler(1989)forIsraelandnearbyareas, slightlyposteriortotransversesuture;scutellumflat, Merz(1994)forNorthandCentralEurope;White with2pairsofsetae,apicalsetaabout0.3-0.6timesas (1988)forGreatBritain,andWang(1996)forChina), longasbasalseta;veinR 4+5 baredorsallyandventrally, butneithermoderncomprehensivetreatmentsnora orwith0-3setulaeatnode,andwithavariablenumber phylogenyforthegenusareavailable.Thefirstlistof ofsetulaeventrally,whichoftenreachthemiddleofthe faunaTephritidaewasgivenbyGiray(1979)from distalsection;wingpatternhighlyvariableamongthe Turkey.Kütük(2003)andÖzgürandKütük(2003) species,usuallyreticulatewithwelldevelopedapicalfork, reportedtheTephritidaefaunafromtheSouthWest sometimesstellate(asin T.cometa (Loew),oreven AnatoliaandAdanaregionprovince. banded(asin T.postica (Loew)and T.sinica (Wang); abdomenalmostinvariablydenselymicrotrichoseand withpalesetulae;oviscapesomewhatflattened MaterialsandMethod dorsoventrally.
