COLLEGE DAY REPORT – 2016-17 Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives- choice, not chance, determines your destiny – Aristotle. A pleasant morning to the august gathering. It is my pleasure and honour to welcome you all to the 12th College Day of Shasun. Today I am overwhelmed with joy to be a part of this esteemed institution which is inching its way towards its pinnacle of glory. It gives me immense joy to declarethat this institution works towards quality education which enhances the vibrant minds to reach their success with full potential. As we all know,Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better. As an example to Franklin Roosevelt‟s sayingwe are not building the future for our youth, but we build youth forthe future. 11 years for an institution is a worthy stage where one can start matching expectations with results, objectives with achievements and above all, blessings enjoyed with difficulties & hardships endured! It‟s indeed a day of retrospection. Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women commenced with a vision of providing quality education to all learners with all the capabilities they require to become socially productive, develop sustainable livelihoods, contribute to peaceful and democratic societies and enhance individual well-being. Our Secretary Shri Abhaya Kumar Jain, Associate Secretary Shri Ashok Kumar Mehta and other Members of the board have been a great support for our Institution to make it go with the motto „Go Beyond‟ and to enhance opportunities for the exploration, creative expression of knowledge and ideas. Magnanimously, the management also offers scholarships for the needy students to ensure that there is no impediment in continuing their education. RECOGNITION: It is a matter of pride that our college had been selected for the „Best Accredited Student Branch‟ award in 2014 by Computer Society of India. The award was presented during the annual convention at Coimbatore on 25th January 2017. We became the CSI Institution member in 2013(IM102066). All the first year students of BSC CS and BCA are the student members. NIRF RANKING 2017 The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD and launched by Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015. This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.Our College has applied for the NIRF RANKING 2017 under the OVERALL and Discipline based Ranking. NEW INITIATIVES: The secret to getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one." - Mark Twain Likewise, we also with lot of positivity took new initiatives for this academic year which would definitely give a great ambience to our institution. The following new initiatives have been taken this year: SHASUN SUKHADA in association with the Department of Psychology was started to provide counselling and guidance services to students and staff by a Counsellor. SAILS-Sail Shasun. The SAILS, is an idea that developed into a program which helped the students to explore their inhibitions and fears and enjoy the peace that the large stretch of water offers. From 27th of September, 2016, the sessions started and on 30th September, 2016 the MOU was signed between the college and TNSA authorities. Since then, the students have been actively involved in the sport. First batch of 12 budding sailors have completed successfully, the first level of training and are in the race to achieve the objective and vision behind this initiative. SWEEP SHASUN WOMEN EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE SWEEP - the competitive exam wing of Shasun College aims at creating women as leaders and government officials and students were trained to face UPSC and TNPSC exams right from 2014. At present 100 trainers are getting trained in TNPSC and 34 in UPSC. Four aspirants from the first batch Ms.Aswathi, Ms.Meenakshi, Ms.Lakshmi Priya and Ms. Gayathri are undergoing vigorous training and are going to appear in 2017 preliminary exams. SEED: SHASUN EMPOWERMENT & ENTREPRENEURIAL DEVELOPMENT The Entrepreneurship Development Cell named Shasun Empowerment and Entrepreneurial Development conducted a 3 day workshop on „KICK START YOUR VENTURE‟. The cell hosted a 5 day student training programme on “Entrepreneurship Development” in association with ICTACT and SIDBI. In order to nurture the idea of entrepreneurship among the students, the Cell aims at creating an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the campus by starting temporary stalls named SHASUN VEND -IN. Nearly 75 stalls were put up by students this year. The Cell along with the Environment club organized Organic Bazaar on 28th September 2016.The purpose of the bazaar was to enlighten the students regarding environmental protection theme “Eco-friendly products‟. The Cell also organized Diwali Damaka‟2016 as a part of Diwali celebration. The iconic Shasun Bazaar was organised on 4th February 2017. This year totally 105 stalls were put up which included 10 self-help groups and 2 NGOs and it was modeled on the lines of the trade centre. The stalls offered an assorted potpourri of products and services ranging from clothing, accessories, footwear, eco- friendly products, self-design and customized products. As a part of the club activity, SEED organized a session to enhance the knowledge of the students and motivate them by way of inviting Entrepreneurs from various fields. This year My Story Session was organized with the concept of Physically Challenged Entrepreneurs from SELF HELP GROUP. SHE CELL „SWARAKSHA‟ Shasun Empowerment Cell for Women (SHE) organized an awareness programme on Women safety „SWARAKSHA‟ held on 29th July 2016 in the college premises. Mrs GirijaRaghavan (Entrepreneur), Dr.Shalini Janardhan (Psychiatrist), Ms.Shantipriya (Lawyer) and Mrs.ViniVikram (Social worker) were the guest speakers. Advisory Committee member Mrs.Usha Abhaya Kumar also graced the occasion with her presence. All the guest speakers focused on empowering women through education, safety and employment. The students were motivated to participate in all sectors of life to build stronger community and economy which will enable them to achieve their goals and improve their quality of living. This program gave a reawakening in defining the role of women in the current era. SHASUN SAMSKARA Shasun Samskara – the heritage club was inaugurated on 3rd March 2017. Dr.Chitra Madhavan – Historian and Archeologist inaugurated the club. SWACHH BHARAT Swachh Bharat is yet another initiative by our college to serve our society. Our college made a pioneering effort towards our Government‟s initiative by bringing about awareness propaganda at the Mambalam Railway Station. As a part of the initiative, the college composed a song which acquired its complete shape in the form of Swachh Bharat Initiative DVD. The DVD release function was held on October 24, 2016. The Chief Guest for the DVD release function was Dr.T.G.Srinivvasan, Health Education Officer, Greater Chennai Corporation. The Special Guest for the event was Mr.K.Veerappan, SWM, Corporation of Chennai and Zonal Officer (Zone-10). AIESEC AIESEC is a unique and growing network of 100,000 students, from various academic backgrounds like management, commerce, engineering, humanities and law. It isa non- political, non-profitable independent and entirely student-managed. The intern will be required to work in a host environment for a total period of 6 weeks, with a group of 25-30 different individuals from 15-20 different countries, working towards the same goal of making this world a better place to live in. On August 4, 2016, the Memorandum of Understanding was signed between AIESEC and the college. Ms.Aparna of II Vis Com visited Egypt for the project „Tourism‟, while Ms. Pooja Shah and Ms.Ojaswi Lodha of I Vis Com visited Nepal for the project education. As a part of extension with University Relations the organisation with interns from Italy, the members had a brief session in the topic Gender Equality for the students of AIESEC club in the College. SHASUN SAMVRDHHI (Sai) A forward looking liaison cell named as Shasun Alliance with Industry (SAI)was launched to strengthen the relationship between the institution and industry through an array of activities.An advisory committee with the members Ms.DivyaSukumar, partner of M/S Sukumar and Associates, Chartered Accountants, Chennai, Ms.Leena Anil, Founder and MD, Success Manthra, Mr.SreyansBardia, Co-founder and Director, BOT VFX, and Mr. S. Velmurugan, Director-Projects, Analytics and Information Management, Cognizant Technology Solutions was constituted to share the inputs and help the students to be employable. SDA (SHASUN DATA ANALYTICS) SDA (Shasun Data Analytics) is initiated with an aim to promote consultancy through Data Analytics. Data analytics refers to qualitative and quantitative techniques and processes used to enhance productivity and business gain. Data is extracted and categorized to identify and analyze behavioral data and patterns, and techniques vary according to organizational requirements.
