CITY PROFILE 1.1 INTRODUCTION Miraj is a historic town in southern Maharashtra. The history of the town dates back to the 10th century, and the town is known for its rich tradition of Hindustani Classical Music and for religious harmony. It served as a stronghold and a strategic bastion owing to its location and was an important Jagir of the Adilshahi Court of Bijapur. Shivaji Maharaj stayed in Miraj for two months during his South India Campaign. It was the capital of the erstwhile princely state of Miraj Senior. Pathwardhan Raje ruled Miraj until Independence. It is one of the leading medical centers in India. Miraj is also a very important railway junction and is part of the Central Railways network. Miraj City is part of the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation formed in 1999. The city has a unique distinction of having the highest number of per capita hospitals in India. It boasts of two medical colleges and more than a hundred private clinics and hospitals. Miraj is the place where one can get the finest Indian String instruments such as Sitar, Sarod and Tanpura. These are made of wood and specially treated gourds. This art was pioneered by Faridsaheb Sitarmaker in 18th century and is still practiced by his descendants. Land Area proposed - 7125 sqm. (Approx.), Built up Area 7125 sqm.(Proposed) Existing development at site: None Surroundings - North: Station approach road and private area South: Vacant railway land with some abandoned structure East: Railway vacant land followed by Sukhniwas hotel West: Circulating area of Miraj and station building Accessibility - The site is accessible from the station circulating area which has small shops on both sides. 1.3 LOCATION AND CONNECTIVITY Miraj lies on the National highway 4 and is well connected to cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Goa etc. 1: Location of Miraj in Maharashtra Mumbai Miraj Source: Maps of India Roadways Project Information Memorandum (PIM) Page 5 Development of MFC at Miraj Railway Station Rail Land Development Authority National Highway 4 bypasses Sangli at 40 km. There are two exits for Sangli-Miraj twin cities on NH 4 Both exits form a triangle with NH4 and Sangli and Miraj are about 40 km from each exit. Railways Miraj is an important junction on the Central railway. Until recently, it was the only junction to have all three rail gauges - broad gauge, narrow gauge and meter gauge. The last narrow gauge train departed on 1 November 2008. Now Miraj has only broad gauge railway tracks. It is connected by railway to Pune on the north, Kurduvadi via Pandharpur on north-northeast and Hubli and Goa via Londa junction on the south. Passenger trains from Kolhapur to Solapur started running on the converted Miraj-Pandharpur- Kurduvadi broad gauge track in February 2011. 1.4 DEMOGRAPHY As per the census of 2001, Sangli-Miraj had a population of 436,639. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. The city has an average literacy rate of 77% with male literacy of 81% and female literacy is 69%. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. To the north is the station approach road. To the east of the plot is vacant railway land followed by Sukhniwas hotel. The Miraj railway station building lies to the west of the site. To the south is an abandoned structure.
