Abstract Since the group Ext(A; B) is divisible for any torsion-free group A, the natural question arises, when Ext(A; B) is torsion-free - espe- cially without vanishing. While the class ∗B of all groups A such that Ext(A; B) is torsion-free was discussed in several publications, for ex- ample see [4] and [5], there is less known about the dual class A∗. This paper investigates some homological properties of the class of Abelian groups B such that Ext(A; B) is torsion-free. Moreover, we compare the 1 ranks of the divisible groups Ext(A; B) and BextB(A; B) whenever A is a countable torsion-free B-solvable group and B has a right hereditary endomorphism ring. Mathematics Subject Classification: 20K15, 20K35 Keywords: Abelian group, extension, torsion-free, solvable group 1 Introduction Every Abelian group B induces functors HB(·) = Hom(B; ·) and TB(·) = ·⊗E B between the category of Abelian groups and the category of right E-modules where E = E(B) denotes the endomorphism ring of B. These functors induce natural maps θA : TBHB(A) ! A and φM : M ! HBTB(M) defined by θA(α ⊗ a) = α(a) and [φM (x)](a) = x ⊗ a for all α 2 HB(A), x 2 M, and a 2 B. A group A is B-generated if SB(A) = A where SB(A) = im(θA), and 138 Ulrich Albrecht and Stefan Friedenberg it is B-solvable if θA is an isomorphism. Moreover, a group P is (finitely) B- projective if it is a direct summand of ⊕I B for some (finite) index-set I. If B is a torsion-free group of finite rank, then all B-projective groups are B-solvable. 2 First results on the class A∗ Throughout this paper all groups are assumed to be torsion-free Abelian groups of finite rank. By Warfield this implies that the p-rank of Ext(A; B) can be calculated by rp(Ext(A; B)) = rp(A) · rp(B) − rp(Hom(A; B)), where rp(A) means dimZ=pZ(A=pA) if A is torsion-free. Furthermore, Arnold showed that ∗ 2 A 2 A if and only if A is a finietly faithful S-group, i.e. rp(End(A)) = (rp(A)) Q ∼ Q ∗ for all primes p. Since Ext(A; Bj) = Ext(A; Bj) the class A is trivially j2J j2J closed under direct products. Moreover we conclude Theorem 2.1 The class A∗ is closed under epimorphic images. Proof: Considering the short exact sequence 0 ! B0 ! B ! B=B0 ! 0 we obtain the exact sequence ···! Ext(A; B0) !α Ext(A; B) ! Ext(A; B=B0) ! 0. Since A is torsion-free Ext(A; B0) is divisible and so is Im(α). Thus the short exact sequence 0 ! Im(α) ! Ext(A; B) ! Ext(A; B=B0) ! 0 splits and hence Ext(A; B) ∼= Ext(A; B=B0)⊕Im(α) which implies that Ext(A; B=B0) is torsion-free whenever Ext(A; B) is. 2 Note that this theorem fails if A is not torsion-free. For example, choose 0 A = Zp1 , B = Z and B = pZ. Then Ext(Zp1 ; Z) is torsion-free, because it is isomorphic to the p-adic completion of Jp, the additive group of the p-adic integers, but Ext(Zp1 ; Z=pZ) is torsion. This argument underlines our general restriction on torsion-free groups. Goeters has shown in [11], that a group A, fulfilling Ext(A; B) is torsion- free and OT (B) 6= tp(Q), is projective with respect to any pure exact sequence 0 0 0 0 ! B !∗ B ! B=B ! 0, which means that any element of Hom(A; B=B ) extends to an element of Hom(A; B). In this case we receive a short exact sequence 0 ! Ext(A; B0) !α Ext(A; B) ! Ext(A; B=B0) ! 0: Hence also Ext(A; B0) is torsion-free. Unfortunately this is not true, if OT (B) = tp(Q). For example let A = B be the Corner-group of rank 2. Then B is torsion-free, any pure subgroup B0 < B of rank 1 is free and the qoutient-group B=B0 is divisible. Fur- thermore, we have End(B) = Z. By applying Hom(−; Z) to the short exact sequence 0 ! Z ! B ! Q ! 0 we obtain the exact sequence Hom(Z; Z) = α Z ! Ext(Q; Z) ! Ext(B; Z) ! 0 = Ext(Z; Z). Since Q is divisible the A-solvable groups and the torsion-freeness of Ext 139 L group Ext(Q; Z) is torsion-free and hence of the form Ext(Q; Z) = Q. So 2@0 Ker(α) cannot be a pure subgroup of Ext(Q; Z) and hence Ext(B; Z) cannot be torsion-free. On the other hand, Ext(B; B) is torsion-free since B is a Murley group and hence a finitely faithful S-group. This gives raise to our more restrictive approach of considering: 3 Some properties of A∗ for B-solvable groups As turned out, some properties of an Abelian group B are often better de- scribed by considering subgroups of Ext, as can be seen in the discussion of Butler groups. Similarly, the group Ext(A; B) is not always the right tool to study homological properties of B-solvable groups. These are better described 1 by the subgroup BextB(A; H) of Ext(A; H). It consists of the equivalence classes of sequences 0 ! H ! X ! A ! 0 with A and HB-solvable with respect to which B is projective [3]. Theorem 3.1 The following conditions are equivalent for a torsion-free Abelian group B of finite rank. 2 a) rp(E) = [rp(B)] for all primes p. b) If A is a torsion-free B-solvable group and H is B-generated, then there 1 is a monomorphsim α : ExtE(HB(A);HB(H)) ! Ext(A; H) such that coker α is torsion-free divisible. Proof: a) ) b): Since B is a finitely faithful S-group, Ext(B; B) is torsion-free. For an B-generated torsion-free group H, consider a quasi-splitting exact sequence 0 ! H ! X ! B ! 0. Observe that X is a torsion-free group : such that SB(X) = X. Since B is a finitely faithful S-group, SB(X) is also pure in X. Thus, X = SB(X) and the last sequence splits because B has a hereditary endomorphism ring. Therefore, Ext(B; H) is torsion-free. For a torsion-free B-solvable group A, there is an exact sequence 0 ! U ! F ! A ! 0 such that U is B-generated and F is a direct sum of copies of B with respect to which B is projective. It induces the exact sequence 0 ! HB(U) ! HB(F ) ! HB(A) ! 0 of right E-modules which in turn induces the top-row of the commutative diagram 1 HomE (HB (F );HB (H)) ! HomE (HB (U);HB (H)) ! Ext (HB (A);HB (H)) ! 0 ? ? E ? ∼ ? ∼ ? ? = y = y y θF θU α Hom(F; H) ! Hom(U; H) ! Ext(A; H) ! Ext(F; H) 140 Ulrich Albrecht and Stefan Friedenberg in which the first two vertical isomorphisms are given by the adjoint func- tor theorem and the fact that U and F are B-solvable, too. A diagram chase shows that the induced map α is a monomorphism. By the result of the ∼ first paragraph, Ext(⊕I B; H) = ΠI Ext(B; H) is torsion-free, and coker α is torsion-free divisible. 1 b) ) a): By b) there exists an exact sequence 0 = ExtE(E; E) ! Ext(B; B) ! D ! 0 in which D is torsion-free divisible. 2 Corollary 3.2 The following are equivalent for a torsion-free Abelian group B of finite rank: a) B is a finitely faithful S-group. b) Ext(A; H) is torsion-free whenever H is a torsion-free B-generated group and A is a pure subgroup of Bn for some n < !. Proof: It remains to show a) ) b): By Theorem 3.1, we know that 1 there is an exact sequence 0 = ExtE(E; HB(H)) ! Ext(B; H) ! D ! 0 in which D is torsion-free divisible. Thus Ext(Bn;H) is torsion-free for all n < !. Because A is a pure subgroup of Bn, we obtain an exact sequence Ext(Bn=A; H) ! Ext(Bn;H) ! Ext(A; H) ! 0 in which Ext(Bn=A; H) is di- visible. Thus, Ext(A; H) is isomorphic to a direct summand of the torsion-free group Ext(Bn;H). 2 References [1] U.
