Serving as both a map and a journal, it documents the dynamic steps we have taken over the past year.It allows each and every individual to see how her or his contribution has helped shape our university and is helping to define our path to the future. The Fact Book describes the elements of our evolving goals and vision.It chronicles some of the excellence that makes The University of Akron the public research university for northern Ohio, including some recent achievements of which we are very proud: The University of Akron has been selected as one of the nation's 12 Campus Program Clusters Leaders, a designation formally known as the Carnegie Teaching Academy. U.S. News & World Report ranked The University of Akron's College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering second in the nation, making Akron the only public university in Ohio with a science and engineering program ranked among the nation's top five. The New Landscape for Learning campus enhancement program is adding 6 new buildings and providing major expansions or renovations to 14 other structures. And, the University is generating more than 31 acres of open space and planting 30,000 trees to create a park-like atmosphere. At the same time, The University of Akron is creating a New Landscape for Living through its initiation of the University Park Alliance. In partnership with the City of Akron and Summa Health Care, we are launching a community revitalization project in the 40-block neighborhood immediately surrounding the campus. The University of Akron's IT leadership is increasingly recognized across Ohio and around the country. These leadership projects include a 10-gigabit network, enabling the university to meet the exploding demand of e-Learning technology and our Technology Without Boundaries initiatives. Just as significant has been IT's ability to attract federal and private sector grants and donations, which amounted to a record $7.2 million in the first six months of the current fiscal year. The March 2002 issue of National Jurist magazine selected The University of Akron School of Law as the best value in the nation, and our graduates had the highest passing percentage in all three categories of the February 2002 Ohio Bar Exam. We have created the Career Advantage Network (CAN), a program offered through the Center for Career Management that provides guaranteed, major-related, experiential learning opportunities prior to graduation for every qualified student, regardless of academic major or degree level. We also have enjoyed crafting some evocative language to tell ourselves and others about who we are, such as, "setting the standard for excellence and student success in northern Ohio," "experience the Akron Advantage" and "creating a New Landscape for Learning... where you can dream, dare and do the things it takes to change the world." Indeed, the Fact Book reflects how the faculty, students and staff have distinguished themselves, as together we continue to take bold steps toward capturing the University's destiny. Yet, there still is much we must do, and will do, as we advance the obvious promise of The University of Akronand share the story that is beginning to be told within the following pages.
