Once the prayer over the offerings has been recited we enter into the Preface, which is a short dialogue that takes place just prior to the singing of the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy). It is something beautiful and significant, we should not simply pass over it. Below I have placed the English translation next to the Latin and we will speak to their literal meaning: V. The Lord Be with you V. Dominus Vobiscum R. And with your spirit. R. et cum spiritu tuo. V. Lift up your hearts. V. Sursum corda. R. We lift them up to the Lord. R. habemus ad Dominum. V. Let us give thanks to Lord our God. V. Gratias agamus, Dominio Deo nostro R. It is right and just. R. Dignum et justum est. Having already explained the words that appear in the first part of this dialogue, we will recall that “The Lord be with you,” and its corresponding “And with your spirit,” is another way of acknowledging that this is Christ’s Mass. This is a heavenly liturgy! Therefore, now with the invitation to lift up our hearts, we are being ushered into the heavenly realm. It is here (heaven) where the One True Sacrifice is offered, and where the one High Priest is offering the Sac- rifice. Therefore, it is proper for us to identify that in the Holy Mass we are brought into the heavenly liturgy. In this dialogue, we might reflect upon what is being asked of us at this point. Is it merely verbal participation? Sim- ilar to when we have different parts to read in the narrative of the Lord’s Passion that we just listened to on Palm Sunday and Good Friday. Not really at all. Remember, the priest is acting in Persona Christi and therefore we may ask, what is Christ asking of us at this point? He is inviting us, once again, to go to heaven! Msgr. Charles Pope, a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington, has a nice reflection on this proclamation, Sursum Corda: “Let your hearts be taken up! Come and go with me to the altar that is in heaven where I, Jesus the great High Priest, with all the members of my body render perfect thanks to God the Father! You are no longer on earth, your hearts have been swept aloft into the great liturgy of heaven! Come up higher. By the power of my words you are able to come up higher! Since you have been raised to new life in Christ, seek the things that are above where I am at my Father’s right hand. Come up now and enter the heavenly liturgy. Hearts aloft!” Therefore, he concludes that we should no such thing as the “10:00 AM Mass at St. Joe’s. It is the heavenly liturgy.” In a Biblical sense, the heart is considered as the center of one’s person, who they are, the very depths of their be- ing. Therefore, this moment in the mass when we are saying, “Hearts aloft!” it is where we send ourselves forth, up towards the heavenly realm, where we are join our voices with the heavenly ones, in unison, one voice, with the choirs of angels, the principalities, and dominions, in the three-fold proclamation of the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy). For, as the book of Revelation says, in the heavens this song is being offered day and night without ceasing: “Day and night they do not stop exclaiming: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.” (Rev 4:8) As many bible scholars have been able to see, the Book of Revelation describes wonderfully the Heavenly Liturgy. Obviously, however, one does not need to have a degree in Sacred Scripture to see the parallels between the Book of Revelation’s description of what it is like in Heaven and its semblance to our Holy Mass. The similarities are not a mere occasion of chance, but indicative of a continuity and God’s all-encompassing plan to unite us in communion with Him here and now. In other words, it is in the Holy Mass where time and space encounter eternity, heaven and earth meet. Sursum Corda! Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr.
