THE EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF PITTSBURGH IS GETTING A NEW BISHOP! The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The churches in the Anglican Communion are led by bishops. This is Justin Welby! He is the Archbishop of Canterbury and the spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion. This is Michael Curry! He is the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. Here are a few of the other bishops in the Episcopal Church! The Episcopal Church was founded in 1789. This shield is the symbol of the Episcopal Church. It is red, white and blue! The cross in the middle is the Cross of St. George, the patron saint of England. Using St. George’s cross represents the Episcopal Church’s historic relationship to the Church of England. On the cover of this book is the seal for the Diocese of Pittsburgh. That’s your diocese! Can color it in too? This is the Diocese of Pittsburgh! The Diocese of Pittsburgh covers a LOT of territory. Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Cambria, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Somerset, Washington, and Westmoreland counties are all in the diocese. Sheldon Calvary Camp in Conneaut, Ohio is also owned by the Diocese of Pittsburgh! The bishop’s church is Trinity Cathedral, located in downtown Pittsburgh. It is marked on this map with a cross. Can you mark where your parish is on this map? WHAT IS A BISHOP? HOW ARE THEY CHOSEN? A bishop is a priest chosen to lead a diocese. They represent Christ and Christ’s Church. Their role is to teach and care for the spiritual needs of the clergy and the people of the diocese. They visit each church regularly (usually once a year). They confirm members ordain priests and deacons! Nominees for bishop are selected by a committee and by petition. A special meeting is held at which the clergy and representatives from each parish elect one of the nominees to be the next bishop! A bishop can be of any gender. This is our current bishop, Dorsey McConnell, who was elected in 2012! Who in your parish is going to be electing the next bishop? A bishop wears special clothing and receives some symbolic items when they are consecrated a bishop. The next few pages will show you some of these special clothes and symbols. Remember that the special color for a bishop is purple! COPE AND MITER The cope and miter are part of the bishop’s formal wear. The cope is worn when the bishop celebrates Holy Eucharist and the Miter is worn on the bishop’s head as a symbol of the bishop’s authority. For informal occasions, the bishop wears a purple robe called a cassock. Over the cassock is a white garment called a rochet, which has billowy sleeves secured with red wrist bands. Over the rochet is a long red vest called a chimere. CROZIER The crozier is a special staff that symbolizes that the bishop is the head of the diocese, kind of like how a shepherd uses a special staff to guide their flock! CROSS The pectoral cross is worn around the neck. It is distinguished by its size—it can be up to 6 inches long! RING The bishop’s ring symbolizes the bishop’s commitment to the church and the people of the diocese. It often has the seal of the diocese on it (like the seal on the cover of this coloring book!). Thank you to the members of the Transition Committee; to Calvary, East Liberty for assisting with printing; and to the following artists and designers from across the diocese who helped put this coloring book together!
