Psychological issues should be considered as the HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN approach. To create a habitat for Long Duration Mission the psychological Human reliability became fundamental for the mission success. Creativity, harmony and variety are MACHINE CENTERED DESIGN doesn't take into account the key words! psychological factors as the Multidisciplinary has to be used from confinement ones. Pea Schematic (Good Design, Munari, 1963) Habitat project from Moon-Mars Workshop (ESTEC 2005) NATURAL DESIGN HABITAT ON THE MOON (SCHLACHT) - LUNAR ZEN GARDEN (ONO) Natural Design Natural Design is a discipline based on natural elements aimed to create a context of art and design interactions that will increase the psycho- physiological well-being. There are two main philosophies about Natural Design; - one assumes to use the natural elements present in the local environment (ex. Space radiations) - the other is the recreation of biological stimuli (ex. evoking natural structure presented on the Earth) The Zen garden composition is an application of NATURAL DESIGN methodology that is based upon the evocation of natural structures (ex. Sea weaves). NATURAL DESIGN HABITAT ON THE MOON (SCHLACHT) - LUNAR ZEN GARDEN (ONO) Natural elements and biological stimuli are characterized by VARIATION AND VARIABILITY Humans need Variation and Variability in which they have evolved. The basic terrestrial stimuli that we need are: Variation and Variability, to obtain a state of consciousness, opposite to the inanimate artificial stimuli that create a sense of deprivation and feelings of drowsiness. (Mahnke, 1996; Schlacht 2006). Color variation can improve wellbeing. This turn in positives effects on reliability, productivity and emotional stability that are essential aspects for the success of long term missions NATURAL DESIGN HABITAT ON THE MOON (SCHLACHT) - LUNAR ZEN GARDEN (ONO) Variation and Variability The concept of Color Variation and Circadian Variabiliity variation and variability can be in Natural and Confined Artificial Habitat applied for a lunar habitat interior décor, employing a lighting system that creates the same color variation available in the Earth’s day cycle (Schlacht 2007). This has been developed, for example, from the Italian brand I-guzzini with Sivra’s Circadian Light System. Recreation of Earth light variation by Sivra lamp, I-Guzzini. Separate different sizes of grains. Remove middle-sized grains. 2. Keep bigger rocks. 3. Moving on small regorith particles to around the large rocks. What humans will do: 1. Making the plan for the spacescape on a Zen Garden table version or a PC 2. Maintenance for the rover. NATURAL DESIGN HABITAT ON THE MOON (SCHLACHT) - LUNAR ZEN GARDEN (ONO) For Space Tourism Art in outer space could be shown via cameras and monitors to everywhere and it will become a tourist attraction. The tourists in the spaceship to be put into orbit around the Moon will be able to see the garden from the orbit via binoculars. Perhaps the spacescape will be seen from Earth via telescopes as well. NATURAL DESIGN HABITAT ON THE MOON (SCHLACHT) - LUNAR ZEN GARDEN (ONO) CONCLUSION NATURAL DESIGN HABITAT ON THE MOON (SCHLACHT) - LUNAR ZEN GARDEN (ONO) CONCLUSION Everything produced in nature is original, with no two plants, animals or stones being the same. (Munari 1953). To maintain a state of consciousness, we need the Variability of stimuli in which human life has been evolved (Mahnke, 1996). Natural Design, using natural elements of the Moon or evoking stimuli of the Earth, can increase the well-being and the reliability of the lunar exploration crew. (Human Centered Design). Art and design will occur as a part of space exploration to make human use of space complete and successful. Lunar Zen Garden as an example of Natural Design applications can be a psychological support for a human mission. It have implications in the newly emerging field of space tourism.
