By Rana Goodman, Legislative chair We lost the Republican majority in the Nevada senate this election, so please take a look at the topics listed below, many are senior oriented. We are going to really work very hard together to push through the bills that are important to us. This is not hard to do. You can do it from the comfort of your home, on your computer, your phone, or if you want to car pool down to the Sawyer Building you can speak to the committees hearing the bills via teleconference. I will be letting you know in upcoming news letters the dates each bill is open for hearings and will also post the comment link to the legislature as I did last session. If you remember, by click- ing that link you can just write the committee and let them know what you think about each bill. To reach the Nevada Legislative web site: http://www.leg.state.nv.us/ 89052 and 89044 are in District 20 and are represented by Senator Michael Roberson [email protected] and Assemblyman [email protected] Most of the bills are currently still in draft form, so details are not available to post. I can tell you that there are several that deal with veterans, seniors, health care and health care facilities that I will be watching closely and reporting back to you regarding their substance and outcome. I have signed up to track 100 bills at this time. Our guardianship nomination form is in the hands of the Legislative Counsel Bureau being drafted into a bill so that the forms can be merged into the Secretary of state’s lock box as promised. Senator Becky Harris is sponsoring that bill. WE ALSO NEED YOUR HELP ON A NATIONAL LEVEL Senator Dean Heller has been a member of The Senate Select Committee on Aging in Washington D.C. for some time. This year he will be joined by Nevada’s former Attorney General, Catherine Cortez-Masto. In the past, AG, Ms. Masto never chose to consider guardianship complaints as elder abuse or a criminal activity. However now that she is in a much more visible position, perhaps letters and e-mails from home might prompt her to re-think that point of view. Advocates nationwide are calling for reforms in the way seniors are cared for both in guardianship, nursing facilities and every other way. We must stand tall and speak up for ourselves or who will speak out for us as we age and need palliative care? At our November luncheon, Lynn mentioned that the NFRW is working on mental health issues. They are asking for your help to pass some sorely needed legislation while this Congress is still in session. While we are giving thanks for all we have, please take a moment out of your day and Take action now! Please Call Senator Heller and urge him to bring the Mental Health Reform Act of 2016 (S 2680) to the floor and vote YES (you can call the Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to his office). https://twitter.com/sohillsrw www.SHRWhendersonrepublicanwomen. com https://www.facebook.com/pages/SHRW-Henderson-Southern-Hills-Republican-Women/ 3 3 Thank You Heather Stamer For This Wonderful Look At Veteran’s Village 2 4 4 5 5 CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVE Senator Dean Heller Las Vegas office: 702. 388.6605 COMITTEE CHAIRS Sen.
