Barna Páll-Gergely ([email protected]) Received: 30 May 2020; Accepted: 22 June 2020 ABSTRACT.– Three species of non-marine snails (Georissa subglabrata Möllendorff, 1887, G. regularis Quadras & Möllendorff, 1895, and G. turritella Möllendorff, 1893) and one subspecies (G. subglabrata cebuensis Möllendorff, 1887) from the Philippines are reassigned from Georissa Blanford 1864 (Hydrocenidae Troschel, 1857) to Acmella Blanford, 1869 (Assimineidae H. Adams & A. Adams, 1856) based on shell characters. KEY WORDS: Philippines, Hydrocenidae, Assimineidae, Georissa, Acmella INTRODUCTION despite that their shell characters were very unlike those of Georissa (see Discussion). The land snail fauna of the Republic of the Möllendorff (1898: 208) assigned these Philippines is immense with approximately species to “Formenkreis der Georissa 2,000 species and subspecies described subglabrata Mldff.” without definition. (unpublished information, based on species Georissa subglabrata cebuensis was omitted recorded in the literature). Very few have without discussion. Zilch (1973) retained been reviewed in recent times. Eleven these species in Georissa with no mention species of Georissa W.T. Blanford 1864 of Möllendorff’s Formenkreis. (type species: Hydrocena pyxis Benson, The first author conducted a cursory 1856, by original designation, Hydrocenidae review of Philippine Georissa during Troschel, 1857) have been recorded from research resulting in the description of G. the Philippines, described by Möllendorff cavini Auffenberg, 1998. It was determined (1887a, 1893, 1898), Quadras and Möllendorff by the presence of shell characters not found (1895, 1896), and Auffenberg (1998). All in Georissa that the species discussed below are considered obligatory calciphiles with were improperly assigned to the genus limited geographic distributions, except for (Auffenberg, 1998: 111). We here formally G. denselirata Möllendorff, 1894 and G. transfer these three species and one subglabrata Möllendorff, 1887a, both being subspecies to the genus Acmella Blanford, reported from several Philippine islands 1869 (Assimineidae H. Adams & A. (Möllendorff 1898). Adams, 1856), thereby removing them from Georissa regularis Quadras & the subclass Neritimorpha and assigning Möllendorff, 1895, G. subglabrata, G. them to the subclass Caenogastropoda subglabrata cebuensis Möllendorff, 1887 (Bouchet et al. 2017), and reducing the (1887b), and G. turritella Möllendorff, 1893 number of Georissa species known to occur were described in the Philippine Hydrocenidae in the Philippines to eight. 224 TROPICAL NATURAL HISTORY 20(3), DECEMBER 2020 MATERIAL AND METHODS questionable. A diagnosis of Acmella was recently published by Vermeulen et al. Determination of the number of shell (2015), although referring only to species whorls (precision to 0.25 whorl) follows inhabiting Sabah (Malaysia, Borneo): "Land Kerney & Cameron (1979: 13). Acmella subglabrata (Möllendorff, 1887) Remarks. We hoped to examine the type new combination specimen (or specimens) of Cyclostoma Fig. 1B tersum Benson, 1853, but it seems to be lost. Georissa subglabrata Möllendorff, 1887a: 96, Blanford (1869) wrote that the "original plate 4, fig. 5. specimen was probably weathered", and the Georissa subglabrata — Möllendorff, 1893: 145. specimens he examined were fresh, and Georissa subglabrata — Möllendorff, 1898: 208. were received from Godwin-Austen. Georissa subglabrata — Zilch, 1973: 266–267, Blanford (1869) identified them as Acicula plate 13, fig. 18. (Acmella) tersa "with no hesitation", and Material examined. Phil. Möllendorff (1898: 203) lists four Acmella turritella (Möllendorff, 1893) new species and one subspecies from the combination Philippines as Omphalotropis Pfeiffer, Fig. 1D 1851, section Acmella and as indicated by Georissa turritella Möllendorff, 1893: 145, the photographs of the lectotypes given by plate 5, figs 14, 14a–b. Zilch (1967), the assignments to Acmella Georissa turritella — Möllendorff, 1898: 208. seem correct. Möllendorff (1898: 207–208) 226 TROPICAL NATURAL HISTORY 20(3), DECEMBER 2020 records seven species of Georissa from the ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Philippines and photographs of the lectotypes (Zilch 1973) show that those assignments We are grateful to Sigrid Hof and Ronald are correct as well. Since Möllendorff had Janssen (SMF) for granting access to the adequate knowledge of the two genera, we collections under their care. We thank the do not understand why the four taxa Biodiversity Heritage Library (https://www. discussed here were originally assigned to biodiversitylibrary.org) and Jens Lehmann, Georissa. Furthermore, we do not know University of Bremen, Germany for why these taxa were not transferred from literature. This study was supported by the Acmella to Georissa by Zilch (1973). This corresponds with LITERATURE CITED the current understanding of Acmella (family Assimineidae) (see Vermeulen et al. Auffenberg, K. 1998. A new species of land snail of 2015).
