Richard or Dick) King was a journalism professor and author. He was born in Gorman, Texas on January 14, 1924 to Clyde Stewart and Mary Alice (Neill) King. He had one sibling, a sister named Billee. The family moved to Stephenville, Texas in 1929. King graduated from Stephenville High School in 1942. He attended John Tarleton Agricultural College where he earned an associate of science degree in 1943. After World War II, he received both bachelor (1948) and master (1949) degrees from the University of Oklahoma. In 1962 King earned a PhD at Baylor University in Texas. During World War II, King enlisted in the army and was stationed at Camp Hood, Texas. He was assigned as supply clerk to the U.S. Tank Destroyer Forces, 9th Tank Destroyer Group. His tour of duty included England, France, Luxembourg, and Germany. In addition to being a freelance writer, King was a professor of English and journalism. He taught at Mary Hardin-Baylor College, Tarleton State College, East Texas State College, and The University of Texas – Austin. He retired from The University of Texas - Austin in 1983 Statewide and regional organizations King belonged to include the Texas History Association, the West Texas History Association, Cross Timbers Fine Arts Association, and the Masons. On the local level, he held memberships and leadership positions in Stephenville Historic House Museum, Stephenville Area Little Theatre, First Methodist Church of Stephenville, Friends of the Dick Smith Library, Erath County Historical Commission, Stephenville Garden Club, Stephenville Twentieth Century Club, and Stephenville Masonic Lodge No. 267. King wrote eighteen books and numerous newspaper, magazine, and journal articles. Many of his works were about Texas and local history. Album S (Vol. II, “Dick King Abroad,” 1944-1945) The book is a photograph album with a brown cover (10.5”X13”). Its 39 pages contain black and white photographs of World War II. The photographs depict military camp activities and scenes of the people, county side, and villages and cities in France, Luxemburg, Belgium, and Germany. A handwritten or typed note describes each photograph. A program for the December 15, 1950 Annual Christmas Dinner at Tarleton State College is included as a loose item. Album T (Dick King), 1944-1945, undated The book is a photograph album with a brown cover decorated with a raised illustration of a pirate and a treasure box (11”X14.5”). It contains black and white photographs of World War II, family vacation trips, and fraternity activities. The war photographs show soldiers posing for pictures and scenes of cities in Germany, Luxemburg, and France. Three pages contain photographs of the King family at home during the war. The final pages of the album hold photographs of different family vacations, and fraternity activities. A handwritten or typed note describes each photograph. One page with attached photographs
