It houses a variety of relics from all historical periods, from the prehistoric and ancient periods to middle and modern times, as well as paintings, calligraphy, metal art, Goryeo celadon, and Joseon baekja. A tower monument, created in 1017, during the Goryeo period, greets visitors at the entrance. Seoul was named the capital city approximately 2,000 years ago during Baekje period. In 18 BC, Hanseong Baekje was established in Seoul area and thrived for 500 years. Historic sites of Baekje, such as Pungnaptoseong Earthen Fortification, Mongchontoseong Earthen Fortification, and Seokchon-dong Ancient Tombs, still remain in Seoul’s Songpa-gu area. The exterior of the museum is also impressive with the architecture based on the earthen fortification of Baekje. Here, visitors can find just about everything on kimchi and even make kimchi themselves. In addition, the city is dotted with invaluable historic sites and relics, including stone towers in a variety of shapes; Buddha statues; Cheomseongdae Observatory, the oldest extant astronomical observatory in Asia; and the Cheonmachong Tomb where a king of Silla is buried. The museum serves as a stage in which professional artists engage in dialog on the arts, as well as a space for fun and creative exhibitions that give a glimpse of the history of modern art in Korea. Its collection comprises all genres of traditional Korean art, including ceramics, calligraphy, metal art, Buddhist art, wooden furniture, and folk paintings. However, the museum is especially well-known for the large collection of pottery including celadon, buncheong ware, baekja, and other pottery masterpieces. A collection of paintings and calligraphic works are also on display, including works by Jeong Seon, known by his pen name Gyeomjae, and Kim Hong-do, known by his pen name Danwon, as well as Buddhist paintings and folk paintings. A Korean-born pioneer of media art, Nam June Paik (1932-2006) was an experimental and creative artist who incorporated a wide range of technologies into his work. He produced works in diverse genres, including video art, installation art, and sculpture. The center features original pieces collected while he was alive, as well as the wall of Paik’s New York studio, just as it was when he stayed there. It was renovated into a gallery that features ARARIO MUSEUM a collection of modern art from different eras and genres that has been collected for over 30 years. Its collection consists of traditional Korean artworks along with modern works. It also features a variety of everyday objects that were used in traditional Korean society, such as soban (wooden tray tables), wooden furniture, and bojagi (wrapping cloths), that are simple yet elegant.
