YORK CLERGY ORDINATIONS 1510-1519 compiled by Claire Cross Borthwick List and Index 31 2002 © University of York, 2002 ISBN 0-903857-87-1 CONTENTS Introduction Abbreviations vii Alphabetical Register of Ordinands 1510-1519 Table of York Clergy Ordinations 1510-1519 216 Index 226 INTRODUCTION With a peak of 260 priests in 1510, way below the unprecedented figure of 446 regulars and seculars admitted to the priesthood in 1508, the number of men presenting themselves for ordination in the diocese of York from 1510 to 1519 never matched the level attained earlier in the sixteenth century. Though the annual total fluctuated between 260 and 184, there were only two years when it is known to have dipped below 200, and for the decade as a whole the region generated more than 2,200 new priests. Taking account the gap in the records, this produces an annual average of around 220 priests of whom about 40 were regulars and 180 seculars. Suffragan bishops conducted six ordination ceremonies virtually every year with around 150 acolytes, subdeacons, deacons and priests consecrated on each occasion, the candidates sometimes exceeding 200. All this suggests that ordinations had reached a steady state in this decade and provides few signs of any substantial decline. The situation at York parallels that of English dioceses of a similar size. At 172 the average annual total of secular priests being ordained in the diocese of Lincoln during Atwater's episcopate from 1515 to 1520 was almost identical with that at York. During Blythe's twenty-seven year tenure of the see of Coventry and Lichfield an average of 167 seculars were admitted to priest's orders each year. At Coventry and Lichfield, however, the pattern of ordinations differed somewhat from that at York with ordinations climaxing not in the first but the second decade of the sixteenth century, surpassing 200 priests for most years between 1510 and 1520. In the diocese of London ordinations remained similarly buoyant till the mid 1520s.2 Two clerics occupied the see of York during this period, Christopher Bainbridge (September 1508-July 1514) and Thomas Wolsey (September 1514-November 1530), but, as had been the case earlier in the century, neither archbishop ever performed ordinations in person, delegating their responsibilities to suffragan bishops. John Hatton, bishop of Negropont, officiated without a break from the beginning of 1510 until the middle of 1516 when Richard Wilson succeeded him as bishop of Negropont and performed all ordinations for the rest of the decade. Except for one ceremony held in Bishopthorpe parish church in September 1518, ordinations habitually took place in rotation in the Minster, the four friary churches and Holy Trinity priory, the only York churches sufficiently large to accommodate the numbers involved. At some stage folios 116' and 117 have been removed from Archbishop Register 26 which means that the greater part of the ordinations for 20 December 1511 as well as most of those for March 1512 are now lost. In addition seven folios, which originally contained the Jo Ann Hoeppner Moran, 'Clerical Recruitment in the Diocese of York, 1340-1530: Data and Commentary', Journal of Ecclesiastical History, 34 (1984), pp. 19-54; C. Davis, Clergy in London in the Late Middle Ages: A Register of Clergy ordained in the Diocese of London based on Episcopal Ordination Lists 1361-1539 (London, Centre for Metropolitan History, Institute for Historical Research: 2000), p. 24. remainder of the priestly ordinations for 17 December 1513 and the final three or four ordination sessions of the archiepiscopate of Christopher Bainbridge for the spring and summer of 1514, have been cut away from the same register immediately following folio 126. Apart from this, the records for the decade are virtually complete. As in the previous calendar, the vast majority of candidates proceeding to the orders of subdeacon, deacon and priest were ordained to a monastic title. The number of ordinands with identical Christian names and surnames has continued to create problems and in uncertain cases acolytes progressing to the subdiaconate have been assigned the title of the monastic house nearest to their place of origin. The spelling of both Christian names and place names has been modernised, which may have caused further errors, especially in relation to places with very similar names. Particularly dubious identifications have again been indicated by a question mark. The diocese or county in which a location is situated only appears in the text if given in the registers.
