Monday Oct. 28 marked the one-year anniversary of Fontana's death. Fontana was cornered and shot after stopping a car on a quiet cul-de-sac in the Almaden Valley in south San Jose, according to a San Jose Mercury News article and the Officer Jeffrey Fontana Memorial Web site. "The officers are still reluctant to talk about it," said Sgt. Steve Dixon of the San Jose police department. "They're still having a hard time dealing with it them- selves." A ceremony was held in honor ofJeffirey Fontana by the San Jose police depart- ment Monday. Fontana's mother said she is trying to take it one day at a time. "I still have a huge void," said Sandy Fontana, who said she has bouts of depression. "It has been dif- ficult, and I don't see it get- ting any better. Some days are worse than others."
