Have you ever been asked by people who aren't Catholic why we move around so much during Mass? How do you answer them? Do they believe you? Do you know how to answer them? Why do we cross ourselves when we put our fingers in the holy water? Why do we kneel ( genuflect ) or bow when we enter our pew? Why do we kneel when we get in our pew? Why do we stand when the entrance procession begins? Why do we bow our heads at the mention of Jesus Christ ( during the Gloria ) , or the Holy Trinity ( t he Glory Be ) Why do we make those three little signs of the cross just before we read the Gospel? Why do we stand for the Gospel but stay seated when the other Scriptures are read, aren't they all the Word of God? Why do we bow our heads at the phrase "and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man" in the Nicene Creed? and on and on? Well, it's really pretty simple. What we are doing determines what our posture is. As Catholics, we wor- ship with our entire being/with all of our senses. We see the colors of the vestments, we smell the fra- grance of the incense, we see the light flickering in the candles. We stand when we are praising and joy- fully giving glory to God. We kneel to help remind us that there are times when we must humble our- selves before God. Observing the postures and movements of the Church isn't just something overly pious people do. It isn't some archaic practice that clergy observe. What we do on the outside helps us to remember what to do on the inside. Our movements help us pray. May we all grow in our prayer.
