The Power of Prayer – God Wants to Blow Your Mind

MT. ENNON BAPTIST CHURCH REV. A. COLETTE RICE BIBLE STUDY EXECUTIVE PASTOR WEDNESDAY, May 23, 2018 FACILITATOR ___________________________________________________________________________ THE POWER OF PRAYER – GOD WANTS TO BLOW YOUR MIND Rhoda’s Story - Scriptural Context: Acts 12:1-19 12 As soon as he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many had gathered and were praying. 13 When he knocked at the outer gate, a maid named Rhoda came to answer. 14 On recognizing Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed that, instead of opening the gate, she ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the gate. 15 They said to her, ‘You are out of your mind!’ But she insisted that it was so. They said, ‘It is his angel.’ 16 Meanwhile, Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the gate, they saw him and were amazed. 17 He motioned to them with his hand to be silent, and described for them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he added, ‘Tell this to James and to the believers.’ Then he left and went to another place. Acts 12:12-17 WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT RHODA? • Her name means "rose" • She was at the house of Mary the mother of John Mark praying with others who were gathered there • She was young; she is referred to as a "damsel" in some versions which means a young unmarried woman. Another damsel spoken of in the New Testament was the daughter of Jarius and she was 12 years old (Mark 5:42). It’s highly probable that she was around that age • She responded when Peter, knocked on the gate she hearkened to his knock; and recognized Peter's voice • She was so excited that she didn't open the gate but ran inside to tell everyone that Peter was outside • Those around her thought she was crazy • She had to be steadfast in affirming what she knew was true Questions to Ponder: 1. Have you ever had a time in your life when people thought you were crazy because you were standing on God’s promises? How did you react? 2. Why is it sometimes hard to stand up for what you know to be true? 3. Why is it difficult to wait on God? 4. How do you imagine this experience changed Rhoda’s prayer life? 5. Why do you suppose she didn't open the gate and left Peter standing outside? WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM RHODA? THERE IS ________________ IN ____________________. WE MUST BE ____________________ IN PRAYER. WE MUST STAND ON GOD’S _______________________. WE MUST ______________________ THAT GOD IS ______________________. WHEN GOD ANSWERS OUR PRAYERS, WE MUST ____________ ____________ ____________ ____________.
