IN OBSERVANCE OF CONSTITUTION DAY The American Democracy Project (ADP)* - Provost’s Office - University of Northern Iowa presents It Really Was About a Well-Regulated Militia Paul Finkelman Tuesday, September 17, 2013 7:00-8:30 p.m. Reception follows. Sabin Hall – Room 2 – University of Northern Iowa About the Topic Paul Finkelman has published extensively on this topic, and will discuss how the Second Amendment was initially proposed and passed in response to some antifederalist fears of a standing army. The thrust of the Amendment was to prevent the national government from disarming the state militias. Similarly, the Amendment allowed the states to arm their own militias if Congress failed to do so. Presentation will include discussion of recent Supreme Court rulings regarding the Second Amendment. About the Speaker Paul Finkelman is the President William McKinley Distinguished Professor of Law and Public Policy and Senior Fellow, Government Law Center at Albany Law School. He teaches courses on “Advanced Constitutional Law,” “Constitutional History: The Formative Years,” and “Law of Slavery.” A specialist in American legal history, constitutional law, and race and the law, Professor Finkelman is the author of more than 150 scholarly articles and more than 30 books. His op-eds and shorter pieces have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, and on the Huffington Post.
