This former Tar Heel took home an unprecedented five Olympic track & field medals, including three gold medals and two bronze. Her goal to achieve five golds was cut short, however her dominance in the sport of track and field is undisput- ed. Marion Jones grew up in Palmdale, Calif. While watching the 1984 Olympics she decided that she too would be an Olympic champion. At the time she was not sure if she would compete in track or basketball. When she was 11, she wrote at school that she knew what to do with her life: “I want to be an Olympic champion.” Her back up plan if the Olympics didn’t work out was to be an electrical engineer, like her uncle. Marion’s intro to major athletic success came not in the sport that she achieved gold in, but in basketball. As a freshman point guard at North Carolina, the former California High School Female Division I Player of the Year helped the Tar Heels to the 1994 NCAA basketball champi- onship. Jones did earn ACC Tournament MVP and All-America honors in 1997. Her ballhandling, speed and scoring earned her spot on the 1995 U.S. World University Games hoops team, but a broken bone in her foot curtailed that adventure. When she recovered, track became her focus. Jones had always been successful on the track. In fact, she never lost a won the 200 meters in 22.27 seconds. high school race after her freshman year. At the ‘99 World meet, she won the 100 and earned a bronze medal in the long jump, but her season ended abruptly in her 200 meter semi-final when she crumpled to the track with back spasms.
