Just.the.third.head.coach.in.program.history,.Perala.played.against.the.Panthers.in.each.of.her.four.years. (1998-01).as.the.starting.goalkeeper.at.cross-state.rival.Western.Illinois. A strong showing at home highlighted Perala’s first season as EIU head coach. Eastern scored a goal in every home game for the first time since 2003. The Panthers finished the year 4-1-4 at home. The lone loss came.on.Sept..6.against.a.Miami.(Ohio).team.that.went.on.to.rank.second.in.the.Mid-American.Conference. with.11.overall.victories..Eastern.trailed.at.one.time.during.four.other.home.games.but.scored.equalizers.to. salvage.draws. Picked eighth (of nine) in the OVC preseason poll, EIU finished tied for fourth place. The Panthers ex- tended.their.conference.record.of.consecutive.OVC.Tournament.berths.to.11..In.September,.EIU.posted.its. first overtime victory at home since 2006 with a win against Western Illinois. Kaitlin Sullivan scored the game- winner.at.Lakeside.Field,.helping.EIU.end.a.four-game.winless.streak.against.its.cross-state.rival.and.make. Perala a winner in her first game against her alma mater. Seniors Jenny Williams and Laura Ridolfi represented EIU on the All-OVC First Team. Center back Sam 2ND YEAR Balek.was.named.Second.Team.All-OVC.for.the.second.year.in.a.row..Kaylin.Lorbert.and.Hillary.Blake.were. both.named.ESPN the Magazine.Second.Team.Academic.All-District.for.their.impressive.4.0.GPAs..As.a.team,. EIU.won.the.OVC.Team.Academic.Achievement.Award.for.women’s.soccer.thanks.to.having.the.highest.per- centage.of.its.players.on.the.Commissioner’s.Honor.Roll. Lorbert.led.the.OVC.in.saves.per.game.and.save.percentage..Together,.Lorbert.and.Williams.made.EIU.the.league.leader.in.saves. per.game.while.also.ranking.second.in.total.saves. Perala.joined.Paul.Harbin’s.coaching.staff.at.UAB.in.June.2003.as.a.graduate.assistant..The.Blazers.enjoyed.quite.a.bit.of.success. during.her.time.with.the.program,.qualifying.for.the.NCAA.Tournament.in.2004.and.2006..UAB.was.the.Conference.USA.regular-season. champion.in.2003.to.go.along.with.its.tournament.titles.in.‘04.and.‘06..The.2004.team.won.a.school-record.16.games.and.defeated.Wake. Forest.in.the.opening.round.of.the.NCAA.Tournament. Perala.made.an.immediate.impact.on.UAB’s.goalkeeper.corps,.which.was.comprised.of.only.a.pair.of.freshman.‘keepers.when.she. arrived.on.campus..In.2003,.the.Blazers.limited.the.opposition.to.21.goals.in.19.games.and.registered.nine.shutouts,.both.program.records.
