Cricket PNG are extremely excited about the prestigious event which shall be a ttended by two greats of Australian cricket, Andy Bichel and Michael Kasprowicz. This is Kasprowicz’s second visit to P ort Mor esby in 2 009 foll owing his attendance at the SP Sports Awards. Kricket Nite is a successful fundraiser for Cricket PNG with cricket and sports memorabilia available for auction, along ‘ ’ w ith the opportunity to sponsor one senior men’s player for the year. The 2009 event will have extra excitement added to it w ith the announcement of the national senior men’s, Barramundi, squad, along with the unveiling of the newly appointed N ational Director of Coaching for PNG. The unveiling follows the announcement of the new appointment earlier in the day, w hich Bill Leane, General Manager of Cricket PNG, notes is an excellent coup for PNG cricket. Cricket PNG launch Constantinou Shield with great success . … Play in PNG has begun to heat up with both seniors and juniors set to hit the field in the upcoming weeks. Rounds 3, 4 and 5 of the Constantinou Shield have wrapped up and it is set to be a tight finish on 16 August. Esco have struggled to find form throughout the tournament dominated by Kina Securities who suffered their first one day loss in round 4. Saturday 25 August shall see the Kriket Bilong Sumatin Schools Final take place at Amini Park. In its third year, 33 schools participated in the tournament from the commencement of competition on 9 May 2009. Cricket PNG are excited about the young talent on display and view it as an excellent opportunity to mould the future stars of PNG cricket. Newsflash – July 2009 A YEAR IN THE ROLE OF ICC EAP DEVELOPMENT OFFICER Charlie Burke reflects on his first 12 months with ICC EAP I t is over a year now since I moved to the sports capital of Australia (Melbourne) from the golden city (Perth) to start my r ole as the ICC EAP Regional Development Officer (RDO). Although I have officially lived in Melbourne for 13 months, I h ave travelled for more than 150 days in o ur region. W hat is the honest truth about working for the ICC EAP development team? To sum it up, it has had many challenges, s ome cultural and some logistical, but overall it has been motivating, encouraging and most of all enjoyable. ICC EAP Regional Development Officer Charlie Burke with Vanuatu stars Pierre Chilia and Andrew Mansale. M y first trip was back in July 2008 to visit PNG for their finals of the Super Series (Constantinou Shield) and spend some t ime with the Cricket PNG staff. Since then I have travelled to Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Vanuatu, the Philippines and F iji, and have met some fantastic and inspiring people. I have had the opportunity to visit kids playing cricket for the first t ime in an orphanage and to witness first hand their learning of what a great game it is; work with elite players and coaches a t Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence; meet volunteers that have never seen a live game of professional cricket but h ave been involved in the game for twenty plus years. Along with these opportunities I have had the chance to try some lo cal cuisines like Beetlenut, Kava and fried chicken hearts and necks. However, one thing I will NEVER try is Balut, a c hicken egg with a nearly-developed embryo! D uring my short time with the ICC EAP development team the EAP office and NCBs have achieved many things including t he following: employed 7 General Managers, 5 High Performance Managers/National Coaches and many other staff in varying positions both Full Time and Part Time, 10 coaches attending the AC&D seminar in 2008 8 coaches presenting a Level 1 course, our first indigenous coach attending the Level 3 coaching course in Australia, 6 coaches attending Level 2 courses through the State/Provence Partnership Program, 3 coaches announced as scholarship coaches, Formation of the EAP Coaches Association, launched by Greg Chappell, Visits to Fiji and Vanuatu by Victorian Bushranger Chris Rogers and Central Districts’ Bevan Griggs respectively, Very successful and well-attended EAP tournaments, the U19s in Port Moresby and the U15s in Jakarta, providing our members the opportunity to showcase their facilities, 8 debut players/coaches competing with the EAP team in the Australian Country Cricket Championships, Over 11 player placements in New Zealand/Australia along with 4 players attending and training with the Australian and New Zealand Women’s sides in preparation for the ICC Women’s World Cup in Sydney earlier this year. T hough important to acknowledge the achievements that the EAP family have made, we also have an exciting, yet demanding next few months. Samoa will host the ICC EAP Men’s Trophy in September, whilst New Zealand Cricket will h ost the High Performance Managers meeting in October followed by the Advanced Coaching and Development seminar. N ovember will be an equally busy month with the EAP Squad camps in Brisbane at Cricket Australia’s Centre of E xcellence. This will provide players the opportunity to train and work with some of the best coaches in the world as well as p lay two one day games and a twenty20 fixture. I n closing I would like to thank everyone for their support to date and look forward to the coming events as we strive to be the number one region in the globe. Newsflash – July 2009 ICC EAP Tournaments ICC EAP U15s Cricket 8s Trophy claimed by PNG Rokroks Performance in the round-robin section of the U15s Cricket 8s Trophy determined the 2009 champion, with the PNG Rokroks continuing their strong performance of 2007 to claim the title. PNG played exceptionally well throughout the tournament dominating each opponent faced. Cricket Indonesia hosted the Trophy in Jakarta from July 14 to July 17. ICC EAP Tournament Director Nick Frayne said, “All is now in readiness for a fantastic tournament, which will serve as a real show-piece of where high performanc e cricket is going in the region.” With the introduction of Twenty 20 cricket, and an ICC World Cricket League Division 8 spot up for grabs for “ those not already embedded in the World Cricket League system, the stakes are high and we are certainly expecting some competitive cricket from all participa nts”, said Frayne. “The facilities in Samoa are outstanding, and with 4 ovals all situated next to each other, the s tage is set for a truly great spectacle.” Vanuatu and PNG to fly the EAP flag at ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in T oronto, Canada Toronto, Canada is currently preparing to host the U/ 19 Cricket World Cup Qualifiers between 1 to 13 September, at which Vanuatu and PNG shall represe nt the EAP region. The event is the lead-in tournament to the 2010 U/19 Cricket World Cup to be held in New Z ealand between 16 and 30 January. Six out of ten places remain to be filled for the main draw in 2010. Vanuatu and PNG shall be competing against the USA, Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Afghanistan and Hong Kong for one of the prized positions. SICA commence sea rch for General Manager The Samoan International Cricket Association has begun their search for a General Manager. The position shall be based at Apia Park Stadium, Samoa and involve travel throughout the country as SICA continue to grow the game throughout the Pacific nation.
